Used for close-ups of flowers mostly and other subjects of interest.
More compact and easier to carry and set-up than the Nikon R1C1 system. Works satisfactorily in the TTL and manual modes.
Instructions are not complete. Does not explain the flash operation when using AIS lenses (I use the Nikon D2x and the D300 which can be used with AIS lenses and use manual focus to better control the focus plane.)
Not as flexible as the R1C1 system in controlling off camera flashes.

I bought my unit in March of this year and it worked beautifully until last week, when the left flash tube kicked the bucket. I'm contacting Sigma as we speak, since the product is still under warranty. Its a shame because the unit worked beautifully for extreme macro photography. However I've been using it with the right flash tube only, and its been okay.
As a side note, this unit is a little hard to figure out at first, and the "manual" provided is less than useless. Its definitely a learn-as-you-go product.
Whether it was really worth it or no will depend on the repair quote Sigma gives me.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
This macro flash was easy to attach to the camera and use. The instructions were simple, and the features were very similar to nikon flash features. I tried it on my Nikon D5000, taking close up pictures of a miniature rose. It was interesting to try the different settings. I got some very different effect, and will have to experiment more. Overall, I was very pleased with the lighting this flash provided. If you don't want to spend the money on one of the more expensive flashes, this one does an excellent job.

Bought it for the AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens, but could not fit EM-140DG flash and protective UV lenses at the same time.

I use it for macro with ttl and I can hardly go wrong. Not sure if it is strong enough for portrait/fashion model type work but great for macro.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
I'm a dentist, I use this flash for dental photo, and Macro Ring Flash standardizes all my photo indipendently by room's light.
The Macro Ring Flash isn't great for to have an immage of the premolar region photographing the front teeth, because flattens the image and doesn't contributes to the images depth.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
Within past year, began investing my time in macro work.
Was somewhat apprehensive with my final selection of a ringlight.
However, this item was very easy to use and the results that were achieved in photographing flowers, insects, tiny inanimate objects, as well as portraits, were impressive and exciting. This item is worth the investment to significantly increase your options with macro. Very happy with modelling results.

works great for up close macro dental photos w/ Nikkor 105mm Macro lens. For full head shots the flash was a little dim, so had to open the app more, Only had about a week, but seems to be working great for now. recharges fast for rapid shots

Really easy to use in both TTL and manual modes. I use in conjunction with a Sigma 150mm Macro and am thoroughly satisfied with the image results. Light weight and quick to attach/remove.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
Used on full auto it is more reliable and easier to use than the r1 system and it will go into auto power save which is something the nikon dedicated will not do. It also takes standard aa rechargeable batts. It's not quite as flexible as the r1 but for my use (teeth) it is much more straightforward.

My Sigma EM-140 worked for about 20 photos and then stopped flashing despite all my efforts to correct the problem. I returned the item for full refund without any problems. Perhaps I just got a bad copy. B&H was wonderful to work with as always and I have no complaints about them.
