This is a pretty standard ball head with a plain square quick release plate; no panning. I got this with the matching Gitzo 1-series traveler tripod. If not for the generous rebate, I would've opted away from this tripod head.
For the most part, it does what it is expected to do. It will hold your camera tight in a given position. In the vertical position, the release plate just can't hold tight enough to my camera (Nikon D700 + 24-70) to keep it from creaping (turning).
The head is strong enough to hold a full frame camera with a 70-200 f2.8 lens, but probably, because the lens foot will allow the rig to better balance. Try that rig and attach to the body, I'm pretty sure trouble will follow.
Get this tripod head if you get the rebate. But, for the money, there are better heads out there. And, for just a little more money, there heads the pros swear by.

Very easy to use. Almost intuitive.
A pleasure to use in the field once it is setup.
A little bulky and no level. Does not fit in the case together with the Gitzo traveler tripod
Does not have a level.

I got this ballhead as a package with a GT1531G Mountaineer tripod. It is great except for one thing - When a 35mm-style camera is mounted the body blocks rotation of the lever that locks in the camera-mount plate. The lever is spring-loaded so you can get it set right - it's just a pain. Seems like there would be a better way of locking in the camera plate. Stability and locking is excellent - I can use this with my Pentax 67 and shorter lenses!

I am getting increasingly frustrated with the complicated and unreliable attachment of the QR plate. Not very quick at all.
Very frustrating when switching lenses and trying to capture a photographic moment when you cannot easily get the QR plate back on. Currently in my house trying to get the QR plate on and having difficulty. Not something I want to deal with out in the field or at home.

Perfect match for the Gitzo Traveler Carbon Fiber Tripod. The built-in level is a real plus. Makes it very easy to level the camera. Very lightweight yet strong.

Comments about Gitzo G1178M Magnesium Center Ball Head 1:
I used only once. I couldn't put the Quick Release back to the Ballhead because the screw on the Head was too loose and became high to prevent the Release from clicking into. I had to open it and tighten it. And more, the ball is loose, too. Brand new things shouldn't be like this.

This head took a little time to get used to, but everything that I have wanted to do with it (except panning video shots) I have been able to. Solid product.

Purchased to complement the Gitzo 1541 tripod, this ball head is lightweight and gets the job done. I do not find that I can get the camera positioned very quickly using this ball head, but it is strong enough to handle my kit weighing in at about 4.5 pounds and is super lightweight for easy carrying and small enough to travel with.

This came with the Gitzo Traveler tripod. It is light weight and works well. The release takes a little time to get use to but it is secure and won't move. It is a good compliment to the tripod.

Comments about Gitzo G1178M Magnesium Center Ball Head 1:
I got this head as part of a wonderfully priced B&H kit of Gitzo traveler tripod and this ball head. My only real complaint is the orientation of the camera on the QR head can place clamp and level right in your face during shooting. It's only a millimeter or two larger than the mounting location on the Gitzo traveler tripod, and therefore is a very minor space loss over the true travel head. I'm sure there are better, but for the money, and the kit, this is not a bad option. If you want to spend more, skip this head.

The most important thing is that it is strong and very stable. I was long over due to purchase an item like this. The other Gitzo heads where much more expensive and i bet they do the same thing.

I got this with the B&H combo deal with the Gitzo 1541 CF legs.
For the price, it really doesn't deliver.
I am getting increasingly frustrated with the complicated and unreliable attachment of the QR plate. Plus, the ball head lock doesn't prevent the camera from drooping.
First of all, you have to slide the QR plate in while pressing the button. Then you have to turn the small lock just right so the QR plate can squeeze through (turn it too much and the QR plate won't slide all the way in, too little and the lever won't lock because the camera gets in the way when trying to turn to tighten the lock), and then you have to turn the knob to secure the plate to the ball head.
The camera won't slide out even if you don't tighten it using the lever, but the plate will jiggle around in the ball head if you dont.
I upgraded from the Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head and I prefer that head over this one. Too bad the Manfrotto one is too heavy.
Many recommend the Markins Q3T ball head because it's light, holds a tight grip, and is very simple to attach and detatch, albiet for more money.
Also, I was shooting products and had it on a 135 - 150 degree angle and I saw that it drooped down more and more even when I tightened the ball head lever as much as I could.
If you're thinking of buying this ball head, I'd reconsider. I'm planning to sell mine to fund a Markins ball head.

This held is well made, and I would have kept it if head manufacturers could agree on a standard. I have a Manfrotto with a quick plate, and another tripod with the same system, and I assumed that Gitzo's quick plate would be compatible, but I was wrong. I sent it back and ordered a Manfrotto, which doesn't seem as well made, but will play better with the rest of my equipment.

Terrific addition to my Gitzo tripod. A little heavier than the head that came with the tripod, but the quick release is well worth a bit of weight. Love Gitzo products: strong, light weight, steady, less important to me but not bad - nice-looking.

Comments about Gitzo G1178M Magnesium Center Ball Head 1:
Coming from only ever having used a pan/tilt head, this head is absolutely amazing. One easy to grasp knob controls everything. Setting up a shot has never been easier. Even with a heavy lens pointed downward, there is now downward lurch or lean after you tighten up the ball head and let go of your camera-- it stays exactly where you set it. It feels strong, and solid-- you get the feeling of both quality parts and craftsmanship. The quick release system is stable and efficient.
