Blurring the line between consumer and professional video cameras Sony has created the HVR-Z1U camcorder. It adheres to the HDV Consortium's specifications for 1080i recording on popular DV mini cassettes. This camera represents the widest array of professional features within a new standard of miniaturization. The HDV video standard will provide about double the resolution of the old standard DV formats.
In contrast with consumer cameras, this pro model HVR-Z1U offers many special functions that the professional operator will immediately appreciate. Just as an example, the HVR-Z1U will keep track of the hours of operation the camera endures. Another example of the pro camera's greater abilities is that it records and plays in DVCAM, consumer DV (SP mode), and the HDV formats. You may also use the LCD screen simultaneously with the viewfinder, a function not found in the consumer model.
The design of the camera is aimed directly at the filmmaker, the most modern event video producers and even widescreen news shooters. Because it records in high definition and standard definition modes it can be used in a variety of production scenarios that may change from client to client or evolve over time. It is NTSC and PAL system compatible as well.

I love my camera! I've had it for 3 years now, and I don't have one complaint. I've used it to shoot weddings, commercials, music videos, live stage productions and it hasn't failed me yet!

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
I picked up the HVR-Z1U to shoot ENG. I can't say enough about how great it is! From the XLR to iLink for a digital recorder, this camera can't go wrong. And since it's small, it's easier to handle vs the news business big shoulder cameras. I can get in and out with ease. And the controls and menu are simple to use.

I purchased this camera to produce product videos for my company. This camera is amazing. The quality will rival much larger - more expensive cameras.

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
This was a perfect choice for me as it's ability to shoot HD and SD is what sold me. The camera is light and well balanced. I'm not sold on CMOS so the 3 CCD capture system was a plus. The camera travels well also.

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
I still love the HVR-Z1U that I bought from B&H when it first came out in 2003.
Even though the technology behind this camera may seem a bit old in the very fast paced world of HD video cameras, there is no doubt that the HVRZ1U was very mature when it fist came out and still is a solid and reliable piece of equipment in todays environnement.
Thanks Sony and B&H.

We use this camera for in our new business for weddings, reunions, graduations from drug programs -- or for any other excuse. We have two of them: They can be programed in such a way that they work in sync to the frame. Great feature. I give this camera 5 stars. I also bought the extended warranty. If I drop it in the water, all I do is fish it out and they will take care of it. Great insurance!

With any of my previous camcorder I always found difficult to zoom-in/out without a little shaking. This time I have been able to do so without a problem.

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
I use the Z1 to shoot my own documentaries and art movies, and to shoot 2nd camera for other production companies. It's industry standard for observational documentaries with small budgets. Cons: I wish it had exchangeable lens, and a filmic setting like the Panasonic AG-HVX200. The focus ring doesn't have a stop on it which is very annoying.

As an Producer, Director and Artist, if you take time to master this camera, you can produce amazing pictures close to Sony's [$] cameras. Your aperture, lighting, filters, depth of field, proper exposure and white balance is the key. [@]

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
i use this cam for corporate video. It works well for that. It's not great for run-n-gun material due to the fact that you can't place it on your shoulder and still see the viewfinder/monitor. Well, I guess that's common with all prosumer cameras.

I travel and do cultural documentaries. This is a good camera for what I do. Light, but not too light. Good controls on it. Good in low light. Overall another excellent Sony camera. Dual xlr is a must. I use it with 2 senheiser g2 packs. I'd love it if there was interchangeable lenses.

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
I´m a movie maker and I have one HDVZ1 since 2006. It has good image and easy controls. However, with low light there are some problems (noise) and should be better if the zoom lens were higher (20x for example).

Comments about Sony HVR-Z1U 1/3" 3-CCD HDV Camcorder:
Been using this camera for 1.5 years now, and whether it's event video or live-action handheld work, the picture quality is really great. The colors aren't nearly as red in saturation as the Canon GL1/2. Battery life, even w/using the flip out LCD, is stunning (I've gotten 5.5 hours ... with the LCD in use the whole time).
