Very nice tool for landscape, solid construction, feel good to operate.
You have to watch your horizontal line at the lowest range ( 12 mm )but very acceptable at middle range , 18 mm and higher.

I would not hesitate to recommend this lens to a friend or anyone.

I was a bit skeptical buying a third party lens, but overall I am very pleased. The build quality is very good (better than some of my Nikkors, in fact), and I haven't noticed any optical deficiencies other than what is typical for ultra wide angle lenses (corners appear stretched out of course). This is my first non AF-S lens, so I was also worried about how loud or slow it might be. I was surprised that focus turned out to be faster than ANY of my Nikkor AF-S lenses (105mm f/2.8 macro, 35mm f/1.8, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5) and dead-on accurate. Yes, you can hear the screw drive, but it's a very "smooth" sound (at least on my D300), which I can't really imagine being a problem for anyone. It's only slightly louder than the AF-S motors I've used, and much quieter than any SLR mirror slap I've heard. I've used it in the field for landscape photography a few times now with no significant problems. Setting the lens to 12mm and getting very close to your foreground subject (3 to 6 inches from the tip of the lens) can create some very dynamic compositions, but it definitely takes some practice to get just right. The only thing I don't like about the lens is the awkward method of switching from AF to MF (which is pulling the whole focus ring toward the camera), but that's something I can live with considering this lens is less than half the cost of the comparable Nikkor. One other thing worth noting is that the supplied lens hood is fairly large in diameter (it needs to be in order to avoid vignetting). It can be reversed and stored on the lens like most modern Nikkors, but that will definitely increase the amount of space the lens takes up in a crammed hiking backpack. If that's a problem for you, just do like I do and clip the hood to the outside of your pack.

I thought a lot about this purchase, as it will probably be the last lens I buy.

All my other lenses are Nikkor FX, but I needed just a bit more wide angle for interiors and narrow streets while traveling.

The quality and performance are what I expected, having had some Tokinas from the early 1980s: nearly as good as Nikkor, for a fraction of the price. I'm glad I got this screw-drive before they discontinued it.

bought this lens at [$], which was a good $250 less than its much highly regarded counter part 11-16.although it lacks 1mm at the wide end, is only f/4, tends to have more CA and is generally less sharp as a lens, i have no regrets and absolutely love this gem. i tried the 11-16 before buying the 124, and truth be told, apart from those differences i stated above, the 11-16 didn't hold anything over the 124. in fact, the 11-16 was prone to glare, and its colours were never saturated enough - there was not one photo i didn't have to post process heavily.perhaps i got a dud copy of the 11-16, maybe its because of the lighting in my photos (they were takin outdoors at 6pm in the evening), but i'm still perfectly happy with the 124. so if you're broke or on a major budget, and you dont need crystal clear clarity, AND if you've got an AF motor in your camera... this lens is the one for you.

I have used this lens for a couple weeks now and so far am quite pleased by the performance. No surprises, from my perspective sharp, clear to edge and well made. A bit of a flare problem when pointed towards the sun but that was expected.

You will not regret of having this lens! I waited for 2-3 rounds (due to shortage of not manufacturing Version 1) and finally B&H have them in stock! I went to Hong Kong but all the shops did not have it and only version 2 was available. Better get it before Tokina decides not producing it anymore!
It produce shape images any where from F5.6 onwards. Range is wide enough for any landscape, group pictures etc. I am not a pro but now I do feel like when you have excellent quality pictures produced from this lens!
I have an D90 and Auto Focus is very fast, don't consider about of buying Version 2 unless your body has no built-in motor.
I would like to give Tokina 5 stars of having such quality lens while keeping the price low. Thank you so much!

I've been wanting a super wide lens for my Nikon D7000 but didn't want to spend the big bucks for a Nikkor lens. I'd heard good things about the Tokina from friends and decided to give it a try. It's just what I needed since my other wide angle zoom starts at 18mm. It was priced right and the quality is great.

Incredible lens. Great contrast, color and the build quality is top notch. I know the 11-16 2.8 is the lens everyone lusts after, but the price, useful zoom range and image quality of this original Tokina ultrawide makes it the lens for your bag!

This is probably the best value in lenses today. I bought this instead of the second generation and am very happy with the purchase. I used this lens in Yellowstone national park and got some excellent pics. The camera used, Nikon D200 and D300.

Bought this lens a few weeks ago. It was out-of-stock for quite a while; as soon as B&H notified me that it was available, I ordered one. I chose the older version because of the significant price difference, and my Nikon D7000 camera has an auto-focus motor.

As most user comments point out, the build quality of the lens is very good. It feels very solid. The zoom ring and the focus ring operate smoothly. The image quality is very good - very sharp, good contrast and color. I have noticed some chromatic aberration in the corners, but I have not encountered any flare (yet).

The only flaw in my lens is back-focus at the wide end (12mm). First time I put the lens on my camera, I took a picture of my room, and the focus indicator on the lens was beyond infinity. I need to use AF fine-tune of about -15 to fix this. Problem now is that at 24mm, it causes front-focus. So, I've set AF fine-tune to -10 as a compromise. Note that I have several Nikon lenses, and none of them have back or front focus issues on my D7000. Having said that, auto-focus is not critical in an ultra-wide lens because of the generous depth of field. I have used the lens in manual focus mode with great results.

I was very happy to find out that my D7000 will auto-focus in live-view with this lens, if it is not too dark. Slow, but very accurate.

Overall, this Tokina lens is a great performer. At an unbeatable price for this focal range, it gives great pictures for landscape and interiors.

I have always wanted an UWA lens as 18mm isn't always wide enough for DX. Reviews around the web over the years have consistently been positive for this lens so I finally ordered one - think it was the last one in stock since the inventory status became "temporarily unavailable" after placing my order. I have a D70s and D7000 so didn't need the more expensive Ver. II that replaces this lens.

I am very glad I bought this lens as it takes some amazing photos. The many web reviews are pretty bang on - images are very sharp, colours are bright, and distortion is minimal and easily correctable with software if it really bothers you. At 12mm F4, about 70% of the frame is extremely sharp. A little softness remains on a small section of the extreme left side of my lens even at F11 but this is only visible if I pixel peep at 100% - I would never print anything this large so it doesn't bother me. Some reviews also say that the CA is "hideous" but i can only see a little CA if I look really hard at 100%. THe D7000 gets rid of CA automatically so it's nothing to worry about.

This is a fun lens to use. Using F11 at 12mm, pretty well everything in the frame is sharp without too much effort on your part. If it ever comes back in stock, just buy it as it is a steal for the price.

I bought the original AF version since both my cameras have an AF motor. VERY pleased. Good heft without being obnoxiously heavy. Hood is a nice plus.
Constant f4.0 max aperture is nice.
Best results seem to be f5.6 - 11 (surprise!!).
Would definitely recommend if, like me, you can't spring for the Nikon$$. Some reviews I've read state difference between this & Nikkor are marginal. Someday I may know for sure, but in the meantime...love it!

Tis lens is very sharp at 12mm even wide open. At 24mm it's not bad but this lens definitely excels at the wider settings. Stopping down some helps. Construction is very good. Zoom and focus rings are super smooth. Focus is fast on my D7000 and it isn't too noisy either unless the lens is really hunting for focus (like when you use the live view contrast detect focusing). Maybe the lens with the built in motor and improved coatings is a tiny bit better but for $150 more it wasn't worth my money to find out!

This is an exceptional lens especially considering the price. I've used the Nikon 12-24 and this lens seems just as sharp and has less distortion at half the price. It's somewhat heavy but the weight doesn't bother me since the majority of professional grade lenses are going to weigh more than consumer grade lenses. This thing is built like a tank, it should stand up to professional use for years to come.

Upon first handling the lens I noticed that it was pretty heavy. I like this; to me it not only is one sign of solid construction, but also could help in dampening any vibrations from the shutter or iris. As for image quality, it seems great to me, no initial complaints.
