Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This Impact 43" White Translucent Umbrella is suggested for use in mid-length portraits for one or two persons.

Can't go wrong
You can't go wrong with this shoot through umbrella. I am a portrait photographer and needed an umbrella that would give me a nice soft light that maintained true skin tone.

43" - big enough to light a whole body. Great soft light at short distances from model. Push back for a more contrast look.
Durable for the price. Secure snap to open and close.
Every portrait photographer should have one of these umbrellas.

pretty cheap...you get what you pay for
When I got this out of the box and opened it, one of the caps came off! I had to SEW the cap back on. Feels and act pretty cheap.

on the other hand, it does what it is supposed to be. I would have rather spend a little more money getting some other umbrellas...

Used as a replacement for my Interfit EXD200 studio lighting kit. A bit larger than the one that came with the kit but works great. [...] At first seems thin, but diffuses light adequately for my little home studio taking mostly family pics - haven't noticed any hotspots yet. Also lets enough light through to kill the ambient tungsten yellow. Great replacement.

Good sized umbrella. Construction is just like any other umbrella I've seen, not rugged, but fine. No handle, but otherwise the same as a big drug store umbrella (just white) used a pair a bit starting home studio and have been happy.

I teach photography at the high school level. We had a couple of old Smith Victor lights and stands. We have a very tight budget but by springing just a little of my own cash for two umbrellas I was able to give my students very effect experiences in studio lighting.

My first umbrella so i can't compare to anything else. It is what it says it is though, 43" white umbrella and it does what umbrellas do. Quality is great for the price and really can't ask for anything more.

I use this as a "shade" for a model in bright sun so she does not have to squint. It helps a lot and is so portable. This is best as a diffuser of light more than flash reflecting into the interior of the umbrella.
But be careful with it, it is kinda thin metal construction and it almost bent to the point of no return when the wind tipped over the stand and it hit the ground. It is delicate and not strong construction.

A good value shoot-thru umbrella. I attach to a light stand with my speedlite behind it. A bit flimsy, but with a product like this at this price point I don't mind.
