Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This Impact 33" Beaded Silver Umbrella is suggested for use in head-and-shoulders portraits for one or two persons.

Comments about Impact Beaded Silver Umbrella (33"):
We use this umbrella with a balanced fluorescent bulb and it works great. Unfortunately, we use it almost exclusively with food photography and it tends to be just a bit too focused for that line of work. Still, it is a welcome addition to our studio.

Comments about Impact Beaded Silver Umbrella (33"):
I use Impact lighting umbrellas at work all the time with continuous lights for video. This is the first one I purchased for "home studio" use for still photos with my speedlights.
Good quality all around, and casts decent quality light with good diffusion, color, and consistency. I have no complaints about this umbrella.
Great for single portraits or table top objects. Not really large enough for group photos, for example, but they make other sizes that will work.
This also fits nicely in my lighting bag next to my Impact stands.

These umbrellas are much brighter than my old ones, easy latch, all metal rod. No complaints here, they even have a plastic pouch to slip them in when done using for safe keeping, I feel they're the best for the money

If you plan to do close up and in-tight photography this is a must. Very good diffusion with minimal light source sacrifice. This little guy will save you some headaches.
