Not compatible with 35mm cameras
The Tamron AF18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO is a high power zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras using the more compact (APS-C) digital size image sensors. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 28-300mm in 35mm format.
Designed as an "all-in-one" lens, it will meet almost all photographic opportunities without changing lenses.
The 18-200mm zoom lens realizes an MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of 1.5' (45 cm) over the entire zoom range by the employment of a new optical/mechanical design configuration. Since the maximum magnification ratio at f=200mm is 1:3.7, you can enjoy close-up photography easily and conveniently.
Note: Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

Most photographers are equipment junkies and I'm no different. But there are times when you just can't carry every lens you own. Like hiking remote mountain trails, where every ounce of weight in the pack has to be carefully considered, or at family gatherings where the subjects are impatient.
This lens fills the need nicely. It's long enough to shoot sports like hockey, and wide enough to shoot landscapes that are almost 3D. The range is good, the quality is good, and the images made with it are good.
I have other lenses with focal lengths that fall within the range of this lens, but this lens has given me a level of versatility I didn't have - and some stunning images.

I was hoping i could use this lens to replace my kit 18-55, but i don't think so. I'll start with what i didn't like:
As other people have mentioned the focusing at low light isn't very good, borderline frustrating. I took it to a late evening party and probably spent more time focusing than snapping pictures. It also has much more noise focusing than the kit lens. In daylight, it works much better. I have noticed it also has trouble focusing on macro shots.
At the extreme's of the lenses focal length, there is a slight vignetting, but not bad. I can live with it. However, attaching a filter imposed darkening of pictures at once again the extreme focal lengths. Trying to stack filters made matters much worse resulting in unacceptable shots. 1 filter at a time for this lens. My 18-55 lens could take 2 with much less interference. However, I can live with it.
What I like:
The focal length is nice. Having the option of 18-200mm for any shot is very convenient. Having such a broad zoom I could zoom past some of the flaws mentioned earlier.
Size. The lens isn't that big, slightly longer and heavier than the kit lens i have, but not by much, especially considering how much more lens it is.
Zoom lock. Nice feature, but i didn't have any trouble with lens creep, not yet anyway. Perhaps when I use the lens a bit more it will wear in and this feature i'll learn to appreciate it more.
The zoom is quick, which is nice when covering such a broad focal length.
If i had a chance to do it over, and I had more money, i would probably try a lens with less zoom, ex:18-125, and another lens, 70-250,300...but that's quite a bit more money, and when you're on a budget, like I am, this lens will do.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR:
I was looking for a 24-105mm lens. This is a good substitute. I can compensate for the reduced sharpness at the outermost zoom ranges.
My K-x seems a little slower to lock in focus with this lens and has caused me to miss a few action shots. Not a big deal as is most cases it locks in releases the shutter. The $60 rebate sealed the deal for me.

It may not be the "best" lens there is, but it is sort of like a Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife... 9 times out of 10 it will do the job.
For those instances where it just won't cut it... you'll need better glass... just like there are times when you will need a real screwdriver, a good set of wrenches and a hammer.

This lens is a great but for a cheaper single walking around lens. Especially sweet with the $60 rebate. I have yet to find any lens creep, and the lock is a very nice feature. I will say that the focus is quite loud, but not a deal breaker for me.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR:
Got rid of my DA*18-50 f/2.8 and Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 after trying this lens. No more lugging two heavy lenses around, no more changing lenses, no more cleaning sensor dust. Image quality is comparable to kit lens, good but not great. I'm no purist so the tradeoff is well worth it for me. Tamrons tend to meter incorrectly giving overexposed results. Solution is bias camera exposure value -0.5 stop by default and everything comes out right. Very pleased with this wide range zoom.

Got the lens today, mounted it on my Pentax-Kx. Took a series of shots and compared to both my Pentax kit-zooms. AWESOME.
Tamron sharper, better color, at all focal-lengths. Much more consistent exposure than Pentax. With Tamron rebate "super deal". Bonus is that Tamron 18-200 replaces *both* my Pentax zooms.

Tamron makes excellent lenses and this model included. It is a perfect lense for the armature or the semi-pro. It is easy to use and is a great lense to kill two or three birds with one unit.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR:
I purchased this lens because I was getting tired of having to change lenses (as opposed to changing camera bodies) while doing event photography, going back and forth between a wide-angle zoom and a telephoto. So far I have been absolutely impressed with it, to the point that it has become my default lens (although I still use my Sigma f/2.8 18-50mm zoom at times). It is excellent for macro photography and has great depth of field. There is a somewhat minor problem with lens creep, but careful use can prevent this issue. The lens is also somewhat heavy, to the point that it makes a Pentax K-x rather front-heavy, but it's perfect on my K20D body. Unfortunately, this lens is not great for low light photography, especially at longer focal lengths, but its versatility in other applications outweighs this drawback. You're really not going to find a better lens of this type for the money.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR:
One of tamron's general purpose lens. It has a decent telephoto capability, an average wide angle option. A lens hood that also serves as a lens protector ( this lens has a tendency to creep, but it also has a locking mechanism to prevent it from creeping). For the price it's a must have for photographers with skill level from amateur to semi-pro. Overall it's not as flashy and fluid as high end lenses but it packs versatility given it's construction limitation.

This is really good lens to replace 18-55 lens I got with my Pentax K-x and it's at the same quality may be even better. I am using it now for almost all shooting, I really like the flexibility to shoot wide angle through telephoto without changing lenses. All-in-one solution for good price.

I was looking for an all around lens for my Pentax K10 that gave me the wide angle and telephoto to shoot all my family and vacation photos. This lens seems to do the trick . For the wide scope 18-200mm, the lens is nice and compact and not all that heavy, and now I dont see any need to ever use my original Pentax 18-55mm because the quality on this Tamron is just as good if not better. I also like the lens lock to prevent lens creeping.

Nice compact lens with a wide zoom range. I've not had the chance to use it widely yet, but with what I have done, I'm very pleased with it's performance. Very nice to be able to cover this whole range with a single lens. I've used it in fairly low light indoors at max zoom with great results.

Comments about Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR:
Got this lens after I realized the limited capabilities of the 18-55mm lens that came with my K-x. The only thing I've really used it for so far is sports photography - my friends' adult hockey league. Given that the lighting conditions are horrible and I'm shooting at ISO1600, the photos aren't the best (but really not too bad), but the lens performs pretty well under those bad conditions. The only thing I can say is that at max telephoto, the images are a little soft, but that could be due to camera settings. I can't wait to see what it can do out in the natural sunlight at a more reasonable ISO.

This is my carry lens now for almost all of my shooting. The lens works very well with my ist!DL with the exception of the auto focus not wanting to work when zoomed in on objects at long distance...most likely this is the ist!DL's short coming and nothing to do with the lens. The only negative about the lens is the weight causes the lens to extend when pointed down so the lens lock is a must.

[...] It was already an excellent buy, but the rebate made it even more terrific. It will be my "all-in-one" lens on my Pentax K-x, as its range from 27mm to 300mm is all I need.
