For quality images and sophisticated features, the PowerShot A520 is by far the leader among popularly priced digital cameras. With 4.0 Megapixel resolution, Canon's exclusive DIGIC Image Processor and a 4x optical zoom, images are crisp and bright with true-to-life color. The ergonomic grip and big 1.8 inch LCD screen make this camera as fun to use as it is easy.

4.0 Megapixel Resolution
The PowerShot A520 employs a 4.0 million effective pixels (1/2.5-inch CCD with a total of approx. 4.2 million pixels), making it possible to take pictures with up to a maximum of 2272x1704 recording pixels. This camera also uses a primary color filter for superior color reproduction.
4x Optical Zoom Lens
The PowerShot A520 is equipped with 4x optical zoom lens. The zoom can be adjusted to any setting in the 35mm to 140mm range in 35mm film equivalent terms. The optical zoom is also combined with a 3.6x digital zoom to take you quickly and smoothly to 14x.
Hold and Shoot in Comfort
The camera's cleanly integrated ergonomic metallic grip gives you a comfortable, steady hold. The controls on the rear panel are configured simply and placed intelligently to make shooting and playback easy and natural.
9-point AiAF Autofocus with Special Scene Modes
With the PowerShot A520's 9-point AiAF, you can count on exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Plus, you've also got 13 Special Scene Modes that give you breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough. The Special Scene Modes include Foliage, Snow, Beach, Firework, Underwater, Indoor Kids & Pets and Night Snapshot options
DIGIC & iSAPS Technology
Canon has designed the DIGIC processor specifically for great image processing. Combining the 6 key elements of image rendering, AE/AF/AWB, signal processing, JPEG compression, memory card control and LCD monitor display, this camera delivers better quality images and battery life is improved too. iSAPS Technology provides a 'Photographic Space' that relates the peripheral brightness and the distance between camera and subject according to the zoom position of the lens when taking a picture. By utilizing the 'Photographic Space' data, this camera realizes faster and more precise AF, AE and Auto White Balance (AWB) than ever before.
Light-Guide Zoom Flash
This camera is Canon's first digital camera to be equipped with a light-guide zoom flash. The angle of the flash's illumination changes with the zoom setting of the camera. As a result, there is minimal light quantity lost, and an efficient light distribution can be obtained, even though the camera is miniaturized and powered by two AA-size batteries.
Postcard Option
When this option is selected, images will be taken at the optimum size and quality for printing on postcard sized or smaller paper. In addition, the date and time can be embedded in the image data so that they appear when the image is printed.
My Camera Settings
The start-up image, start-up sound, shutter sound, operation sound and self-timer sound can be customized by the user either with images and sounds recorded on the camera or by using downloaded data from your computer using the supplied software.
Easy, Flexible Direct Printing Options
The A520's Print/Share button makes direct printing easier than ever. Simply connect the camera to a Canon Direct Photo Printer or PictBridge supported printer, press the Print/Share button and print. The Direct print feature allows for image preview and editing (including cropping) on the camera when connected to a compatible printer. Also use the Print/Share button to transfer images directly to a computer (Windows).

My First Digital

By L Spies

from Michigan

Comments about Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera:

I have always been a canon person and will always remain a canon person. My husband bought me this camera for our wedding so I could use it on our honeymoon. It is my first digital camera. Being an owner of a 35mm canon, I picked it up and instantly knew what all of the modes were. Even if I had not known what all the modes were it would have still been really easy to use and figure out. While I hope to upgrade to another canon one day, this was definetly a great first digital.

Expertise: Avid amature photographer

Problems Encountered: My only problem with this camera is that batteries need to be changed often. My husband used his own digital camera while I used mine on our honeymoon and I went through batteries twice as fast as he did. Thank goodness for rechargeable batteries.

Bought it, used it, loved it

Comments about Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera:

Bought one of these 2 months ago, it goes everywhere withme, taken maybe 2000 pictures with it - outstanding, great rangeof features. Only downside is it's slow to power up theflash (couple of seconds) - this hasn't presented a problemfor me but if you're after fast action shots in a low-lightenvironment, this probably isn't the camera for you.

Expertise: Semi-Pro

Items I Recommend: 1gb memory card, rechargeable batteries, charger

Great entry level digital camera with great image quality and optical zoom

By DK

from Pennsylvania

Comments about Canon PowerShot A520 Digital Camera:

I initially looked at Canon A510, Canon A520, Canon A95, Nikon 5900, Nikon 5600, Fuji's F440 and F450 and decided on the Canon A520. The big thing for me was the great image quality it has, great optical zoom (4x instead of 3x for most other cameras in this price range with 4 mega pixels), nice and compact BUT not too small and the manual controls that it has. This was my 1st digital camera for myself and I take a lot of nature photography and let me say that it is great for that. I also took many indoor shots with low light conditions and they did pretty well. Our living room is dark and cozy (with dark red walls) and it still focused quite well and tookpretty good pictures WITHOUT the flash.Don't pay any attention to those out there that want to complain about it's lag time between pictures..etc. Unless you absolutely need to take a lot of continuous framepictures the lag time that this camera has is acceptable. I'm not trying to take 10 pictures in a minute anyhow. Look if you want to take pictures of your kid in soccer or something go get a camcorder. besides you can film the whole game that way and they usually have better zoom capabilities than digital cameras. Besides I would rather watch a soccer video instead of a few continuous frames photos.Batteries since the A520 has only 2 AA instead of the A95 having 4 AA's, I HIGHLY recommend getting rechargeables - you should get them anyhow!! Make sure you get a camera case that has room for an extra 2-4 AA's depending on how many pics you take at a time. I bought a pack of Energizer 2500 mAh (mili Amp hours a term telling you how much punch or power a battery has. The higher the mAh is the better it is for devices like digital cameras, pda's etc. Only Kodak and Energizer have a 2500 mAh although there are some no name brands out there with a little higher ratings. I've used other batteries but these Energizers are really good and last a lot longer than my previous 1800 mAh. Just watch out for getting newer mAh batteries because you will need a newer type charger than will load the batteries up to that capacity.Good Luck!!
