I was looking for a simple way to set my strobes so I could shoot at f11. I didn't want to get 167 additional functions that I would never use - just a simple, accurate flashmeter. After a lot of research, I chose the L-308S and I must say that it was a great choice.
It is easy to use with no extra "junk" that I didn't want. It is fast and accurate. In setting up, I just place it next to the item I am shooting, flash the strobes and then adjust them until f11 comes up on the flashmeter. It is great - no second guessing and my exposures are right on. I don't even have to upload them to my computer to review them prior to finishing the shoot.
In shooting portraits, the same steps are followed. The model holds the flashmeter and a grey card and it's all set up and ready to go.
Overall, I am extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone needing an easy to use, reliable and repeatable meter.

I didn't realize when ordering this that it can only be operated in a mode that gives an EV reading or in shutter priority mode, where you select the shutter speed you want and it gives the corresponding aperture. Once you take the reading, you can push the up/down buttons to change the shutter speed until you get the aperture value you want, and you can then read the appropriate shutter speed. But this is a painfully inefficient way of doing things.
This meter works fine and seems accurate enough. It is just too basic for my purposes. And it offers no spot metering. If all you need is a basic incident light meter, and you don't mind the lack of aperture priority mode, then I see nothing wrong with it.
I don't use strobes, so I didn't test the flash metering.
The ambient light mode without the lumisphere is a bit problematic as you don't know what field of view you are covering and it has no shade, so a bright light source like the sun, even if it is out of the field of view of your shot, would often strike the lens, cause substantial flare, and throw off the reading.
I decided to just use my Sigma DP2s as my light meter for my large format work as I can do spot metering and can see exactly what I am metering, and I can use exposure compensation (you can change the ISO to accomplish that on the l308s). I have much more control. The biggest drawback there is that I cannot select very small apertures like f/64. So some math is needed when I need small apertures.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
I would recommend investing a bit more and getting the L-358 Flash Master Meter. It has much more user friendly controls and it feels a lot more robust then the L-308S.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
I use this meter primarily for photography. It works as designed, and has saved me a lot of time on location and in the studio. You can customize it for 1 stop, 1/2 stop or 1/3 stop increments. The casing does feel lightweight, it's not something that will take much abuse, but I'm extremely satisfied in my purchase decision.
It comes with a handy pouch and a smaller drawstring pouch for the lumidisc attachment.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
I've been using it for about a week and have been very impressed with how it's taken most of the guess work out of composing a shot. Easy to use, simple user interface, and based on the photo quality I'm seeing appears to be accurate.
My only complaint is that the interface plug on the face of the meter doesnt grab the cable tightly and is easy to pull out accidentally.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
I am a photography student and am new to the flash meter. For me, this was a bit difficult to understand and is a bit complicated but it may be because i have never used on before. It is a nice quality and comes with its own case which fits nicely into my camera bag. I would be afraid to drop it because it seems that it would pop apart.

I primarily use this as an incident meter. I am just learning so maybe will appreciate it more when i have full understanding of the product. The manual is confusing and does not seem to cover the steps towards use very well. I had to go out to another site for assistance in the basic use.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
This is a wonderful compact meter, very easy to use. The additional lumidisk works great for reading against reflective surfaces such as glass or printed media.
It does not have a remote trigger so although it can be read with a strobe triggered independently it is a challenge to be in two places at the same time. I would greatly recommend a sync cord which is not included.

I am a budding photographer and this was exactly what I needed. It is very easy to understand and use. I am really glad that I bought it. It comes with a nice case to protect it while in the bag. It even has a nice strap so that you can wear it around your neck until you need it. All in all, it was a great buy and I can't say anything bad about this product.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate - Digital Incident, Reflected and Flash Light Meter:
This is a great meter at a great price. My Cactus V4 radio triggers came with a selection of short cables, one of which works perfectly with the L-308S, so I have remote triggering with this meter. So far it has proven extremely accurate and consistent. Happy with the purchase.
