I listened to a wide range of music from classical, jazz, pop, r&b, etc. The ER-4P sounds great with all the music I listened to. Clear transparent sound, very accurate and the bass is tight and not over powering. The strength of the bass depends on the recording of the music, some music recordings that don't have a strong bass thus ER4-P just don't reproduce it. That is how accurate it is!!
I also own a Shure E3g headphone and I still hear things I didn't hear before on the ER4-P, the bass is about the same on the ER4-P compared with the E3g. Strong enough yet tight and accurate. But the mid and upper level sounds are smashing on the ER4! So very clear, I could hear every articulation from a singer...
Well since listening to the ER4-P I don't think I can go back to most of the junk earphones populating the market nowadays... This is a earphone for people who love their music.

I mainly use this product with my zune and tune every outside noise out. I live with two other roommates so it is needed! Sounds amazing and true. Not much bass response, but thats not what I bought it for anyways. Great product and recommend it for anyone wanting great quality sound in there life!

They are the best in ears ive ever heard.
No hyped frequencies. Amazing presence. Great ear fit. My only problem is the cable noise. Very distracting when walking around.

I also own the top-of-the-line custom-molded Ultimate Ears 18Pro set ($1350), and for all its accuracy, when I'm mobile, I'd mix on the Etymotic ER-4Ps more. The ER-4Ps compensate for the increased bass that a full-contact in-ear system invariably has. Unfortunately the UE's do not. I need accuracy....not some hip-hop edition of the music. I need truth. This is a close as you get for the price, without getting full-sized headphones (Sennheiser HD650s are a good price/accuracy choice for that). Don't hesitate...

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
After eight years and two major repairs, I lost my ER-4Ps somewhere on a snowy Chicago street. Thankfully, Etymotic Research is as reliable and impressive as ever.
The ER-4Ps are ideal for portable devices, traveling, and general use for music listeners. The product comes with a headphone pouch, various ear buds to find your best fit (very important to the folks at Etymotic), extra filters, an adapter and shirt clip.
The sound is unparalleled; clear, concise, layered, delicate. Every accessory to the headphones lends to their supreme sound delivery. With clean filters and properly fitting ear buds, the ER-4Ps perform with great precision even to the most discerning ear, and with the comfort of an over-the-ear cushioning headphone.
Etymotic makes quality products that last - just don't lose them!

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
I am a professional location sound recordist, with over 20 years of experience. These are absolutely, hands down, the best earphone I've ever used. The fit is just right, and so long as I thoroughly clean my ears previous to a shoot, I can rely on trouble-free operation in even the toughest conditions.
The sound is excellent and uncolored, allowing me to really critically judge where problems with mic placement might occur. And, since they are right in my canal, next to the eardrum, there is no need to listen at potentially unsafe levels.
The great thing is that not only do I naturally eliminate wind noise on those kinds of days, but they don't sit heavily on my head, causing discomfort and added heat issues on those kinds of days.
Now, I reserve my Sony cans in the bag for producers on location, where they can plug into the second output on my mixer thanks to its super long cable.
If you plan on using these often, you might want to consider purchasing some additional filters at the same time, so you can carry them with you. Once the filters jam with earwax, they are not really salvageable.

The Etymotic ER-4P is not only one of the best sounding headphones in it's pricerange, it also offers fantastic isolation from outside noise. Featuring up to 41dB of isolation the ER-4P makes an excellent choice for travellers or people who work in noisy environments and don't want to be disturbed. But, I am sad to say it's uncomfortable.

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
Flying often on airplanes, I prefer compact in-ear earphones. Being able to insert these when seated because they are not powered along with excellent noise isolation and sound quality made this the best choice.
On my iphone, the volume was at the lowest level before the airplane engines started and the sound quality wonderful. I had the Klipsch 4R earphones which worked well, but i found the noise isolation and sound quality noticeably better with the ER-4P.

I often know exactly what I want. That's it. Read history of balanced armature earplugs and you'll found that there are no any alternative to er-4. "The accuracy score is probably the single most important tool for earphone design."

I've had these for about a month. Used on my daily bus ride home from work, and during my exercise routine (some running). I'm use to wearing ear plugs via my job, so these are not uncomfortable for me. The twisted wires seem a little delicate, so I'll have to see about the longevity. My previous Shure's lasted almost 3 years. Sound quality is great - I don't need the booming bass overamplified, so I like the balance.

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
I recently bought ER4P when I lost my UE 5Pro. I use a COWON player and use the BBE feature of it. COWON with BBE provide vivid sound. When I couple this with ER4P, the sound is amazingly live - part of which could be because of excellent noise isolation ER4P provides. Compared to UE 5Pro, bass is less on ER4P (yes, I do make sure there is tight seal). You could compensate it with boosting bass on the player. The highs and mid are tighter and cleaner compared to UE 5pro.
Couple of issues -
The gain is less, so you have to increase volume. Not a big problem on my Cowon which pumps enough power. Portables with less power may have issue driving ER4P compared to UE 5Pro.
The material of the cable when rubs against shirt/jacket feed annoying noise into your ears. You can overcome this by securing the cable properly when you walk/run/exercise

After owning these for over a month and thinking I had the correct fit, it took me trying the original, small-3 flange tips to realize I hadn't. I used the foam tips and had a pretty good fit but it wasn't all there.
As many have mentioned before, these are far and away some of the best IEM's you're going to hear. The sound reproduction is spectacular.
But make sure that if you're using any tips other than the foam tips that they are DEEP in your ear canal. Nearly none of the earphone will be visible outside your ear.

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
Been using it for a few weeks now. Overall, the earphones produce very good sound, slightly better fitting as compared to my previous shure (which is also along the same price) earphones that I lost. The only imperfection is the microphony effect on the twisting cable nearer to the earphones. They can be extremely annoying if you keep moving around, or when the cables brush against clothes, shawl or jacket.
Another minus point, the first pair of earphones that I bought had loose connection on the left earphone. After exchanging it on the same day, I got another one with loose connection, this time it's on the right one. So I exchanged it a couple of days later. Now I have the perfect sounding earphones.

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
Previously had 2 pairs of ER-6 earphones. After daily use, both pairs eventually resulted in a short on one side. I was happy with the sound from the ER-6's, just wish they lasted a little longer. I have no complaints about the ER-4P, had them a little over a month. The foam tips seem to be the most comfortable and provide the best seal for me. It was surprising since I've never tried the foam on my old pairs. I'm not an expert, but the sound is crisp in my opinion and I'm 80% satisfied with the bass. Since the ER-4P's are more expensive, I'm trying to treat them a little more delicately. The wires are more substantial so I don't anticipate a problem. I like them so far.

These earphones with the optional 4S adapter cable are now my reference. The 4P is more efficient and is designed for portable devices. The 4S is still the standard but requires more power to drive. These earphones are only going to sound as good as your sound card and amp. With good gear they are phenomenal.

Comments about Etymotic Research ER-4P Noise-Attenuating Portable Stereo Earphones:
The sound quality the ER-4Ps provide is outstanding as expected. Good dynamic range, realistic bass, never before heard details. Their noise canceling abilities were unexpected. You really can't hear peripheral sounds. I had intended to use them for outdoor activities, but realized they are dangerously isolating. I understand why commuters like them so much. I look forward to flying with them. I've actually begun using them as ear protection in my shop to block out the sound of power tools, while enjoying music.
