The Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap adds security to hand-holding a camera, and attaches from the top to the camera's standard strap eyelet, and from the bottom to the camera's tripod socket. For most SLR cameras with a 1/4"-20 tripod socket.

It's horribly expensive, difficult to attach and remove quickly, yet it is probably one of my favorite and most essential pieces of gear.
No more neck straps, no more camera bags, no more missed shots, no more hand fatigue, no more next pain, no more dropped cameras. With the AH-4 attached, your camera is always in your hand and always ready. You arm is relaxed, because you don't have to clench the camera grip. You can even let go of the camera entirely and just let it dangle in your hand, supported by the strap. The camera becomes an extension of your arm.
I use mine on both my Nikon D300 and on my D60 (hint: reverse the base plate to use on the smaller cameras). Switching the AH-4 between them is a pain, however, so I plan on buying a second. To attach the AH-4 when using a 3rd party camera plate (i.e., without the included screw-in plate), you must disassemble the strap from the TOP, where the strap is narrowest, NOT from the bottom, where it is wider and has the leather tab sewed on.
In use, the AH-4 can quickly be adjusted, is easy to slip on and off (no velcro handcuffs around your wrist like some cheap handstraps) and your hand has excellent freedom of movement to adjust all camera settings.
The AH-4 is also an excellent accessory when traveling in rough or dangerous areas. The camera cannot slip off your shoulder (like when using a neck strap), cannot be dropped, doesn't bounce around on your chest (again, like when using a neck strap) and cannot easily be stolen (like out of your bag when not looking, out of your hand when you carry the camera loose, or off your shoulder).
The AH-4 is very well made and durable. It better be, given what it costs...
Best,
Adam

Incompatibility: if you use any mounting plate,e.g. if you are using the Really right Stuff's camera mounting plate. You can either mount your camera mounting plate OR mounting this hand grip without the camera mounting plate, but not both. It's because these two do competing for the mounting space at the bottom of the camera. The above statement pertained to my Nikon D2X and D3s Pro Cameras. I am pretty sure people who bought the hand grip will experience the same thing the I am experiencing.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
I bought this and then returned it. While the product is of typical well-made Nikon quality and provides good security, it unfortunately restricts (right) hand movement and access to controls on the back of the camera.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
Love this strap. It has a cinch mechanism for easy tightening and easy release. It is very comfortable on the wrist. Also very secure on the camera. It has a triple slide, that allows you to also attach a shoulder strap, which I usually do.
I use mine with a RRS L plate. I removed the Nikon plate on the hand strap and threaded the webbing through the L plate strap lug. Now I can still mount the camera on a tripod via the L-plate without removing the hand strap.
Only downside is the cost. Nikon's design is very smart (says the Canon owner.)

It allows you to hold the camera comfortably. You can attach the shoulder strap to the grip so you can still carry it on your shoulder.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
It is very expensive, but it is also top-notch quality. I cannot imagine a better design, manufacturing quality or material choices.
There are probably less expensive alternatives, but I doubt they are all the things that this product is.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
The grip strap is easy to use and the release strap is ingenious.
The lip on the base plate that prevents movement is on the wrong side. I had to install it backwards in order to allow the grip strap to function properly.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
I like the quality of the product, a lot. However, I shoot with a D7000 with the battery grip, and using the hand grip strap eliminates the ability to use the vertical functions of the grip. Also, since the top strap is difficult to put on/take off, it's not the versatile enough for. Basically, a nice product overall, but not if you like using the vertical grip. Also, it's too pricy in my opinion.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
Ridiculously expensive but worth it. Needed slight modification for my D2Xs. Totally changed my carrying experience. Very comfortable to "wear", because when you strap it on that's what it feels like. Looks very, very "pro", which is worth a few bucks itself. I believe it will last a long time with Nikon's excellent quality build. Just buy it.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
I tried this for my Nikon D3s and it seems like it was designed for a smaller camera body. It was too long a reach and was not comfortable. They used to make one that was just a simple strap that attched the same way, but I couldn't find it so I tried this one and it didn't work for me.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
I tried numerous hand straps. None of them were even close to the Nikon strap. Nikon got everything right when they designed this one. Only problem is the price. It isn't inexpensive. If you want one you may not want to wait too long as the product has been discontinued. (Go figure)

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
This is a quality product, well made and durable. It does free you from the strap issues of sorenecks, etc. I did need to return the grip because I have arthritis in my thumbs and it made them very sore. It was not the fault of the glove however. The glove was very comfortable.

Have been looking for a hand strap for a very long time. This is by far the best product in term of its functionality and quality. Absolutely love it. Wish it was cheaper.

Very confortable to carry around your camera, but attached to the D700, it is hard to use some of the controls of the camera. My hands are big but not huge, I haveto wear it a bit loose ion order to be able to manipulate controls.

Great grip. Much better than any neck strap. I can carry my camera all day with zoom lens attached in complete comfort. This grip is a must have for the action photographer. The bottom plats fits perfect on a Nikon D300s.

Comments about Nikon AH-4 Hand Grip Strap:
The strap is not as great as I thought it would be. I find it to be in the way, and I cant move my hand to access some of the buttoms I normally would with my right hand (ie to change the focus point with the dial selector). That being said, some people might have a great use for this product. I am not using it at the moment, and thinking of selling it. I also find the instruction manual not that easy to follow.
