I first bought a few of these bulbs as replacement for my Impact Fluorescent light kits but they also came very handy in various studio applications like drawing table, artwork colouring, chromakey background lighting and direct lighting for various technical uses or even at home.
The colour temperature being well calibrated, the energy consumption and heat emission being very low, it's tremendous value for my multimedia studio.
Not to mention the Edison base which makes it almost universal for any use.

Um, why so expensive?
Works fine, it's bright and good colors. The color is actually cooler than another cheaper lamp I have that's rated 5300K.

Why the 2 stars? It's expensive! Search for the Impact or Interfit brand lamps that are 28 watts - same everything but less than half the price.

Comments about General Brand Spiral Fluorescent Lamp - 27/30 Watts/120 Volts:
I use this kit for shooting HD video. At 16", the fixtures are larger than I expected (that's a plus because they offer a wider spread of light). Assembly was very easy. After assembling however, I found that one of the bulbs did not work. I called Customer Service and a replacement was sent to me at no charge. I only wish the boom arm had a heavier counterweight. Also, light diffusers would really complete this kit.

I am a photo student and I needed some basic photo lights to set up a make-shift studio in my apartment. These do the job, but they are a little expensive. I would recommend getting the lamp by the same company for $10 extra. It has triple the strength of light. Better to have more than not enough.

they do what they are supposed to do... daylight balanced light for my Spiderlite. I photograph newborns so I love the continuous soft lighting that can emulate a window in my studio.

Although only time will tell, the bulb seems to be better than prior ones from another manufacturer that didn't even ship working.

With these bulbs you can turn standard table or floor lights into 5500K on your set. With your key, fill, hair lights balanced - you can now create distance space and ambience on your set. All of the fixtures on our set are now fluorescent - and our sets are cooler. These lamps have rated CR93.

I use these bulbs in my softbox. They provide a nice, clean, white light. At only 27watts, you need a lot of them to light up an area.
Just got them, so, can't yet say how long they last. But, overall a good bulb. Pricey.

I purchased my first 2 of these lamps in 2007 (about 2 years ago), I use them about 8 hrs a day (they are turned on) and use them in a light box. They make my photos lighter/whiter (no yellow from the florecent lights above) and they honestly lasted a very, very long time. So I didn't hessitate to call B&H to find the same lamps when one of them burned out (yes after 2 years). And yes, I would buy them again!
Awesome lamp, long lasting, great value.

Had ordered another brand from a competitor and all of those bulbs have blown or actually turned brown around the base in a short time. Been using these for a month straight full time every day with no problems.

I use these bulbs in a hairlight kit by Wescott which consists of the Spyderlight 3, Stand and 12x36 Softbox. The bulbs are 5500K daylight bulbs and put out beautiful consistent light. No guesswork involved in getting great shots. What you see is what you get.

I have tried almost every light I could find for up close macro shots of Jewelry Items. This light was the godsend. Perfect color, so easy to set the camera for the perfect shots. Saves me countless hours of photoshop editing....just crop, size and load to the server.
I use one 3 light reflector w/ diffuser and two single light reflectors. All the light I need at an economic cost.

We are very pleased with the performance of these lamps. Our IT Communications group interviews and photographs all L2 and L3s in the company and our equipment must be first rate because we can not go back and do it again because of faulty equipment.
