The Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is the first true macro lens of their EF-S series, made specifically for "APS-C" format Canon SLR cameras such as all cameras in the EOS Digital Rebel series, 20D/30D/40D/50D/60D and 7D.
This dynamic, compact, fast-focusing lens provides dramatic detail that goes beyond the human eye. Having an effective 35mm equivalent focal length of ~96mm, it produces 1:1 magnification for extremely detailed close-up images. It is also a very good portrait lens. Autofocusing is achieved with Canon's very best ring-type USM motor, which is fast and silent and allows you to manually override the focus at any time without needing to switch the camera's settings. The field of focus is flat, important in macro work, and the aperture diaphragm is circular to allow more natural background highlights.
Designed for digital photography, the EF-S 60mm Macro has specially shaped lens elements and inner focusing, with a floating element lens design to give good results in images taken at distances beyond the macro realm. It also has Canon's Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare from reflections off digital sensors. An optional lens hood (ET-67B) further reduces the incidence of flare.

I bought this lens after much research in other reviews for this Canon lens within B & H, as well as in other camera tech review sites. Love it! Although many people describe it for use with macro images, you will see that some people describe it for portraits. I find that shooting candid portraits in any sort of light is very easy with this lens. The sweet spot of f/2.8 makes a great difference and the quality is such that I can crop out just a tiny corner of a full frame and still get a very large image with great resolution. This is what other folks have referred to in the way the 60 mm lens has great depth.
Too bad we can't include a link to a photo online, for one look at one of the candid portraits of my grand-daughter and a reader would instantly see the quality. But, please do consider this lens to be an all-around general lens. It does great outdoors, for sunsets and skyscapes, and city snaps too. It fights with my Canon 55-250 mm lens for prime seating on the Canon 40D when I cart it about with my gear.

So I wanted a Macro Lens for my Canon 60D. The EF 100 Macro seemed like a good choice, but 160mm (considering the 1.6X crop factor) seemed too much. I was right (for my needs). The 60mm gives me good room to work AND surprisingly has a FANTASTIC bokeh for portraits. Beautifully shaped round highlights makes almost any portrait a masterpiece! The fast aperture gives you room to work with low ISO and adequate shutter speed. The downside of this great piece of glass is the slow autofocus (which one could expect given the greater range of focus).

I purchased the Lens for shooting underwater Macro with my 50D and ikelite flat port. Overall very happy with the lens. Pool testing showed quick focusing produced sharp images. At sea shooting hasn't been conducted yet but most UW photo guides recommend this lens for Crop sensor cameras.

I do lots of family pictures, and also some macro photo. This lens by far out performs my 24-105 in sharpness and in door situations. I love F2.8 ability and close distance focusing. "IS" would be nice< but I guess the price then would be twice more. Overall you can't go wrong with this baby!

I use this on my Cannon 7D
great for getting in close Macro shots.
Decided on this over the 100mm f/2.8 based on other reviews and price. I am very pleased with the quality of the images.
sometimes takes a little bit for auto focus to get locked in.

I bought the lens about a month ago but so far I only got one day to play with it. I took pictures of plants, flowers, lab specimen, and a couple or portraits to test the lens out and the pictures came out great. The focus, however, was a little slow. I wasnt sure if its because of the light condition or it's the lens. Anyway, considering the price, the lens is a good choice.

For Christmas '11 I treated myself to a Canon EOS 60D and a handful of lenses. I chose this lens as a macro solution, and it really delivers. I originally anticipated only using it for extreme close-up work, however it quickly turned into my go-to lens for all kinds of interesting environments. Highly recommended.

I currently bought the lens for close up photography such as baby photos, engagement close ups of the rings, etc, and also food photos.
The things that are just amazing about this lens are too much to talk about. The clarity is phenomenal and the pictures look outstanding and professional. I spent some time shooting a bowl of cherries that were recently washed in water and to be able to see the droplets of water running down the sides of the fruit was indescribable. This lens is a must whether it be for recreational use or professional use. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
I believe I can pretty much retire my nifty fifty with this lens. So fast, quiet and sharp! As a portrait lens on a crop body it is wonderful, however as a macro lens the 100mm might have been a better option if you want more room between camera and subject. Still it's a good macro lens for still objects, and unless your absolute focus is to do macro only it is a nice versatile lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
While I admit I'm brand new to the world of post-cellphone photography, this lens has been absolutely amazing. The USM is very quiet, the auto-focus very reliable and spot-on, and the weight not too incapacitating. The shipment was quick, the emails helpful, and I would absolutely recommend this supplier and I'll certainly be buying from them again.

Amazingly sharp photos. Works great with Canon EOS XSi. B&H has the best price for this product, even for Canadians who pay customs fee.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
Being my first dslr camera, this is also the first lens I have ever owned. I eventually decided on this one after reading a variety of reviews and comparing prices online.
Knowing only the basics of digital photography but having a decent knowledge of lenses and the physics of light, my comments should reflect this viewpoint.
It is a sturdy lens that I have already put through quite a bit of winter hiking, the temperatures and jostling that come with shooting macro in a dense Pennsylvania forest. I have actually had fun learning to use this lens, it is quite easy to fine-tune it into focus and provides you with a moderate working distance of a few inches (I believe the exact amount is in the detailed description.)
I can't think of anything to say against it that isn't already made obvious by the description of it. I use it for shooting as a hobby and I was willing to pay for the quality over other cheaper alternatives.
A solid lens overall, Canon quality, decent pricing.

Of course the good "field" for this lens would be portrait and macro world. That's why I bought it! And I tell you, this lens performs! very sharp, back blur is good, I would say even in low light conditions it did good job. I am very pleased. One thing though, IS would be nice, but the price probably will be x2...oh well.

I highly recommend this lens. I have been using it as my walk around lens. The APS-C makes it like having a 96mm. It is so cool being able to put the lens hood within 2 inches of a subject. Get it!

The built in flash on my Canon Rebel XS is all the lighting I need. I was pleased that it had the very easy to read distance scale built right into the lense, very helpfull. I will be doing alot of outdoor photography next summer with this lense. i'm very excited about it.
