Small enough to lose when you're doing something that might need it. Keep it in a safe place in your bag and never take it out. Replaces the eye-piece you might have on your camera already (usually a rubber-lined surface) to black out any extra lighting that might make it onto the CCD during exposure. Essential if you're doing natural light night photography

Yes, it absolutely blocks light from getting into the eyepiece - which is why I bought one. I shoot a lot of timelapse and don't want stray light getting in, which can alter the exposures.
The reason why I bought 4, though, was because while it does come with a handy little hooky thing on the back that fits onto the standard strap on my D300S, it tends to come off under real world rough 'n tough usage. So I keep one on the strap, and a couple in my camera bag, and one more at home in the kit box Just In Case.

For such a small seemly insignificant part, it sure does a big job! Results make the HD video even better on my D7000 and D90.

Comments about Nikon DK-5 Eyepiece Shield (Replacement):
I was hoping to replace the eyepiece shield for my Nikon D7000 which broke with my first and gentle usage. This, however, is the wrong shield. Rated 3 stars since they are so fragile.

Comments about Nikon DK-5 Eyepiece Shield (Replacement):
Eyepiece shield used when taking night pictures. Used so you don't chance getting excess light from viewfinder.
I've been losing these for years... you can always improvise, but it's so much easier just to put one in your gear bag and snap it on when needed.
Does what it's suppose to do, nothing more nothing less

Comments about Nikon DK-5 Eyepiece Shield (Replacement):
Useful for those low light, long exposures, with a timer on a tripod, or light painting. This little beauty will keep light from creeping in through you view finder under these conditions. It comes with a new camera, but as usual, "What's this for, I won't need it". Eventually I did. Thank goodness it was available from B&H.
