I have been a big extension-tube fan for years- and when I just bought a Nikon D90 the availability of this set was a key factor in my decision. I do a lot of nature macro work and use these on my zoom lenses. Oh- are they SWEET with the Nikon 18-55 and 55-200. The secret to using them with zoom lenses is that your zoom control is now a coarse focus control and the regular focus(autofocus) is a fine focus. Using these at shorter focal lengths is great for static objects like "barkscapes"; longer focal lengths are great for getting insects from a distance. I use an off-camera flash in low power mode to avoid any motion blur.

The extension tubes worked at allowing my lens to focus at short distances for macro shots, but the build quality was poor. The cheap plastic parts rattled around (when not on the camera), and, while the autofocusing worked through the lens, it was very clunky. I would recommend skipping this purchase and putting the money toward buying a macro lens.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

I'm just getting into photography and I love it. I got a Nikon D3100 for Christmas 2010. Using the extension tubes is really simple. I'm amazed at how close you can get with them. If you can't afford a macro lens, this is the way to go.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

so i bought this to use mostly for my tamron 70-300mm tele/macro lens to get super super macro shots... and since on the description from other people saying that it turns any lens into a macro lens i was even more thrilled. however when attached to my 16-85 wide angle zoom and my 35mm prime i was less than satisfied with the results. maybe i was hoping for too much... when the 12mm extender attached to the 16-85mm the focal distance was severely limited, i was intending on using it for portraiture but found that i had to be within a few feet of the subject, like 2' and no farther otherwise it would be grossly out of focus, this symptom is increased as the extension tube mm is increased. it was the same scenario with the 35mm prime. it allowed you to get close but you had to focus by walking closer to the subject rather than being able to use the focus ring, once your in focal range the focus ring could fine tune the image, but it wasnt what i expected. On the intended lens that i purchased them for i was able to obtain decent results, but again walking closer to the subject to find the focal rang in which to fine tune focus with the focus ring. in some instances this is actually acceptable, but others a disaster. with all three conected together and applied with the 70-300mm two feet from the front of the lens to the subject is the maximum required to get in real close, but if your lens has any vignetting issues these tubes exacerbate the vignette, so a word of caution for those seeking edge to edge sharpness.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

I have only been using this extension tube set for a few weeks now, however they are quite enjoyable to work with. They have proven well with my 50mm f/1.4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. Wider focal ranges (<35mm) will actually pull the focal range inside the lens itself; you can any dust or fibre particles in there! Their body design is good, though it would be better if they carried a similar heavier duty build to that of my Nikon lenses. I am keeping the system well supported when using heavier lenses. Of course the main downside to it is that you cannot just stand up and take a landscape shot without removing the tube(s). All in all this extension tube set is definitely one I would recommend to those itching to try getting in close to their subject.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

I have recently purchased the extension tubes for my Nikon D90. I have started practice using them on the Nikon 85mm macro and the Nikon 70-300mm lens and so far so good. Auto-focus works. There is definately a learning curve... for me, getting used to distances that will focus, impact to f-stop results, however liking the increased bokeh effect. I want to use these for butterfly photos in the spring. The tubes seem to be constructed ok for the light weight lenses I used them with but I think I will need to use extra care with my heavier 70-200 f2.8 lens.

Though I've only used them a few times, these extension tubes are worth their weight in gold. They let you turn almost any lens (in my case a nikon 70-300vr) into a Macro lens. This lets you get incredibly close to the subject for great magnification. On top of that, they allowed me to keep full function of the focus and VR !

I bought the extension tubes to use with my macro lens. They certainly do the job I require ie getting a greater magnification than possible with the lens alone. Sometimes I feel like I'm shooting down the insects throat I feel so close. You do lose some light when using them and at first I found focus and exposure difficult, but this has improved with practice.

I can't offer full marks. The first set I got worked perfectly for a while and then all of a sudden I couldn't maintain electrical conductivity between the camera and the lenses. I wrote Kenko but got no response. Eventually I figured out that the contacts on one of the tubes had failed. I wrote kenko again asking if I could acquire that single tube to replace the one that doesn't work. I never got a response. In the end I bought a second set, I could use the extra extension anyway.

When they work they work flawlessly and are everything you could want but it seems to me that you can't rely on them. I don't know if I had a factory defect or whether that one tube simply wore out. What is clear though, if you get into trouble you won't get any help from Kenko.

You're probably better off buying the Nikon tubes except they're not as versatile. So I'm sticking with the kenko as being the best compromise between price and quality. Certainly the second set has worked flawlessly.

You look at things differently. With these tubes on my kit lens, I have already had great results. Yes they are only plastic but they do the trick. Its all Manual focus with these on and you must get quite close (about 2-3 inches) before you can even see anything in the lens. But then, see the magic happen!

The setup works very well with 70-200 vrII and 50 mm1.8 D. There is around 1 to 2 stop loss of light. Autofocus does not work with 70-200, but with using manual focus you can get very sharp pictures.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

These extension tubes are very useful for mounting between the camera body and existing lens to allow for close-up photography. The lengths provide for varying magnification. The shortest extension tube, 12mm, is not short enough to allow focussing over 12 feet with my lenses. If you want to maintain more of the original lens focusing range a smaller 8mm is available. Quality is okay but electrical contacts can be felt to engage when mounting the extension tube on my Nikon Camera. The interface allows all of the auto functions to work, however, because of the compressed focusing range the two longer extension tubes will defeat the ability of the lens focusing system to react at the in-focus point. For the most part the zoom function of a zoom lens will allow focusing. For fixed focus lenses the camera must be moved to focus and a focus rack is the best tool for this.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

I use the extension tubes on a Nikon 300 coupled with various AF Nikon lenses (24-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, and an older18-70mm 3.5) mostly to photograph coins, flowers, insects and an occasional still bird.

The camera retains full auto focus and exposure while producing edge to edge sharpness when a single tube is used. The camera functions in a similar manner with multiple tubes attached but quickly loses its sharpness. Results using multiple tubes is less pleasing due to reduction in depth of field and softness.

One unexpected aspect of using the set was the abnormal tightness of fit when coupled with camera and lenses used regularly for 2-5 years. Perhaps this will improve with use.

If you keep in mind this set is not a prime lens but rather a reasonably priced tool to focus closer on periodically photographed small stationary objects, you'll enjoy using it.

I have not been paid nor was I coerced to render these comments, nor was this set given to me.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG (12, 20 & 36mm Tubes) for Nikon Digital and Film Cameras:

The Kenko extention tubes are the best to get, without losing any of the automated features of your lens. I use these extention tubes with a D90 and 105mm macro lens. It is amazing how much closer you can get to focussing on a subject. I will recommend this product to anyone who want to take their macro photography to the next level, or for someone looking for a cheaper way to convert their normal lens into a macro lens.

The only con I can list is that these tubes do have a bit of a flimsy/cheap feel to them, and I would take great care before attaching a heavy lens to all 3 tubes.

I also purchased the 'General Brand' medium lens pouch that was recommended with this product on B&H's website. I found this lens pouch a bit too big for these tubes, so will try to get a smaller pouch.

These extension tubes worked amazingly well, but they didnt do what I needed them to do. The construction/build is great. The D300s was able to meter properly and focus was no problem. My only complaint was that there wasnt enough of an explanation in the ad copy to explain how much closer you need to be to your subject in order to focus. Makes sense now. Great tool if you are doing ultra-close-up work.
