Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I bought the Nikon 35-70 2.8 lens several years ago, lost it, and found it this spring. I did not purchase a lens hood with it, and shot it this summer to see if it warranted the added expense. Well, my left hand does not make a good hood!

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
This Nikon metal hood mounts securely onto the 35-70mm I purchased it for.
What is great is that this hood does not have a depth that prevents me from adjusting a circular polarizer, as needed.
Great for crowded areas, let others bump your hoods, not your lens!

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I use this hood with my old Nikkor 28-85/f3.5-4.5. I was not having a lot of flaring problems, but a few in my small studio, where I often find myself close to the bounce umbrella, or at unexpected angles to it. This hood took care of the problem. It would be nice if it were metal rather than plastic, but I appreciate the light weight.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I just replaced my original HB-1 that I'd used with my Nikon 35-70 f2.8 since 2002. I didn't think much about it when I bought it. About a year ago, I dropped my brand new D-80 with that lens and HB-1 hood on it. The hood took all of the shock, and flew off, cracked through. The lens and camera were fine. I glued the HB-1 back together and used it until just recently. It finally got too loose. So I replaced it with a new one. It's a great product, and totally worth it.

I use this for controlling extraneous light and possible glare on my lens while shooting. It's lightweight and well built and for the price, easily replaced in event of mishap. No problems with it.

What else can you say about a lens hood except it works as it should.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I didn't think I'd find this product useful, but I have. Aside from its intended function to reduce stray light across the lens surface, this hood is wide enough that I can adjust my polarizing filter without removing the lens hood, remove and replace my lens cover, and because of the bayonet mount protect my expensive filters from edge damage. No downside for the price that I can find.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I use this on my Nikon D70. This is the second one because I cracked the first one. Thank God I had it on b/c it could have been my lens instead. It is great for both protection and sunflare. I really missed it when I didn't have it. Using my hand to shield the sun just didn't work the same.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I am using this hood on a 35-70 f/2.8 zoom. The zoom will flare without a hood and this hood is necessary if you want to use the lens with a full frame film or FX digital camera. Other hoods will cause problems. This hood is well made and stores in reverse on the lens when not in use.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I wish it was made of soft rubber like the one I found for my Nikon 55mm/1.8 lens. Other than that, it is a hard to find lens hood for the discontinued 35mm-70mm/2.8 Nikon lens.

Comments about Nikon HB-1 Bayonet Lens Hood:
Solved some lens flare problems I was having with the Nikor 35-70mm AF 2.8 and well it's small enough that I just leave it on all the time for cutting out glare and adds extra protection. You can reverse mount it for storage as well.
