The Nikon TC-301 is a 2x teleconverter (also known as a tele-extender) that will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 2x, and will cut back the amount of light by 2 f/stops. For example, using a 2x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6.
NOTE: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (5 elements/5 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses. Only the following lenses are compatible:
AF lenses, in manual mode:
MF Manual Focus lenses:
| Magnification | 2x |
| Lens Elements/Groups | 5/5 |
| Length | 3.3" (84mm) |
| Diameter | 2.5" (63mm) |
| Weight | 9.9 oz (280 g) |

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I use this to give me the extra length I need on wildlife shoots. Makes my 300 2.8 a 600!! It is light and easy to store. I use it on my D3x with Great results. Images are sharp. Only down side...Not AF.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I bought this to use with my 300mm f4. I also use a 1.4 teleconverter, which is nice but often leaves me short. The tc-301 gives me the reach to see the pupil of a bird, at a good working distance. A tripod is a must, and birds in flight are difficult, if not impossible, without the autofocus. It produces a crisp image in good light, with a little vingetting. A great package until I spring for a $6,000. lense.

A perfect match with Nikkor 400mm f2.8 AIS for school wildlife project. Excellent optical and built quality. Easy to mount. Small and light enough to carry all day. A great too to increase magnification ratio without increasing focusing distance. Just be prepared to dial up the ASA.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
My D300 compensates for the fall off in clarity and light sensitivity on the 300 f/4 and 600f/4 lenses I use the TC301 with...and the rest is nicely adjusted for in Photoshop. The payoff with the D300's 1.5 lens factor and the 600mm lens is a whopping 1800mm...and that's EXCELLENT, and necessary, for birds and dangerous wildlife.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I do bird photography (hobby) and have the 400mm F2.8 AI-S. For years I have been using the TC-201.
Although it is recommended that it will work but may vignet. I always wanted the TC-301 but the price was high and I already had the 2x. B&H has a GREAT price on this right now and I'm Extremely pleased. The equivalent 800mm F5.6 is so nice and even easier to focus with improved contrast. The image qulaity is superb but you have to have a really sturdy tripod setup and keep the shutter speeds up. I am using a D300. At F8 the added DOF is needed to keep more of the bird in focus.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I purchased this converter for the sole purpose of using it with my Nikkor ED 500mm f/4P. The two are a perfect match. I don't find myself making my subjects, mostly birds, uncomfortable as I am now able to get shots at a farther distance. Sure manual focusing gets a little harder with a dim viewfinder but in decent light one can get real good shots. The combination works best stopped down by one f-stop but so is any lens with a 2x T-con. If you have a MF super telephoto lens this is the 2x converter for you!

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
Awesome addition to my Nikon lens set. The TC-301 has been used with a Nikon 300mm f/4 ED-IF and D300. Image quality at 600mm has been crisp, and marginally better than comparative images shot using AF @ 300mm. Framed structures and water tanks from 2 miles away were plainly discernible at 600mm, whereas the same targets were either absent or less discernible at 300mm. Best results required a sand-bagged tripod and electronic release, and a minimum shutter speed of 1/125s.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I bought it as a dedicated teleconverter for my old but still great Nikon AI 400 f3,5. My experience with the above mentioned "couple" is very positive. It represents a great extension of the original lens without making it too bulky (compared to same focal lenght tele) and with no relevant deterioration of the sharpness and/or color fringe at least with the Nikon D3. It proved to be compatible also with the old Tamron SP 400 f4. Of course lens + converter have to be considered usable only with an adequate tripod.

Comments about Nikon TC-301 2x Teleconverter for 300mm and Longer AIS Lenses:
I think the major worry about using an extender is degradation in image quality. While the lost of 2 stops is not a wonderful thing, with good light and a good tripod it works wonderfully. You MUST give the lens/teleconverter combo good support.
