This Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO HSM lens is an Apochromatic ultra-telephoto lens with a fast f/4.5 maximum aperture, and it incorporates two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration to a minimum. Internal focus enables responsive and fast autofocus speed.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.
By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 700mm f/6.3 MF ultra-telephoto lens with a 1.4x EX teleconverter, or as a 1000mm f/9 MF ultra-telephoto lens with a 2x teleconverter.
Note! HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

This is an excellent lens. Extremely sharp focus, fairly lightweight for an F4.5. Will not autofocus with the sigma 1.4 EX teleconverter but no big problem. About 2/3 the price of a Nikor lens. Rotating filter drawer works well with a polarizing filter. I have used this lens to photograph big game in the west and it has been a real workhorse for the $$$$$

This lens is extremely sharp, I have photographed everything from grizzly bears to prairie dogs without any complaints. I have photographed wolves in the Lamar Valley at 1/30 sec, with extremely sharp results. This lens is extremely well designed, with the rotating filter drawer. Very lightweight for such a large glass. Extremely fast focus. I would not be without this lens on any trip.
