DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with 35mm, "full-frame" digital, or APS SLR cameras
The Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX is a versatile and ultra-compact telephoto zoom lens that offers a 3.6x zoom range, ideal for portraiture, sports or wildlife, and is designed exclusively for Nikon DX format SLRs. It is the ideal companion to the DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens.
The Nikon Super Integrated Coating used in this lens minimizes ghosting and flare to provide even higher contrast and more vivid mages, even in challenging light conditions.
This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation, because the aperture does not need to be set to minimum.
Note: Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 82.5-300mm.
Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Please click here for a list of incompatible models.
Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with 35mm, "full-frame" digital, or APS SLR cameras

This lens is considerably smaller than I had expected it to be, smaller than my 18-55mm, which is great because it doesn't really add much weight or mass to my gear bag. On the other hand- the construction feels a bit flimsy, especially when the lens is extended the full zoom, however this has not impacted image quality. Because of the three piece zoom construction, I could see dust and moisture becoming a problem when exposed to harsher elements. The auto-focus is fast and accurate, with little to no ghost-focus. Extra lighting (more than you think you need) will be very helpful without VR. When shooting at a shutter speed of 1/200 while fully zoomed, images appear slightly blurred as a result of camera shake. This could be fixed with a mono-pod but nobody wants to carry a mono-pod around. If shooting in lower lighting conditions is common for you, I would highly recommend purchasing a telephoto lens with VR, it will save you many many images and you won't have to regret settling for less.

I purchased this lens for my D40 preparatory to going on vacation in Tennessee, where I expected to get a number of landscape photos as well as less typical 'artistic' shots. While on vacation, my wife purchased a D60 with the idea of adopting the D40 taking advantage of the ability to share lenses.
On both bodies my particular lens was not just slow with autofocus, but frequently did not AF at all, on either body! For me this lens became useless after the first shot unless I focussed manually full-time and until I change the focussing screen to something more precise in both bodies manual focus is significantly more difficult.
Interestingly, the kit lens that came with each body (18-55mm AF-S) had no difficulty with autofocus under the same shooting conditions.

I bought this lens for my wife who loves to take family photo's, action shots of kids, pets and me doing whatever. Also, for pictures of the great outdoors.
She absolutely loves it. Pictures are great quality and the added zoom helps her get close to the action without getting to close.

Actually I bought this lens for my daughter when I gave her my old camera body. I also have the Nikon 55-200mm f/4.56 G ED AF-S DX Autofocus Lens and it has been a favorite. I use this lens more than any other, which is why I thought it perfect for my daughter to start her photographic adventure.

I am the advisor for a high school newspaper, and wanted to give students a chance to stretch their creativity in photojournalism - this lens is the perfect match for our D70 - easy enough for novices, powerful enough for pros. We've been perfectly happy with the lens since we received it.

Casual photography. I recieved the lense and right away I took it out and went crazy with it. Got some great pictures with it, I had been using the lens the camera came with, so when I uploaded the pictures to my computer they were much better than what I had previously been able to do. I have no complaints about this product for casual photography.

Even the Nikon 55-200mm is a powerful zoom lens, it can be used both in door and out door. That is what so great about the product. Beside the auto focus feature is fantastic. You set it once and no need to touch that ring any more.
After more than 35 years of using Nikon product this is the best I ever had.

Bought this lens for one of my high school yearbook photographers, we've had great success with all the lenses in this line. They're responsive, rugged, well-balanced.
If there's any stress test of camera equipment, it's the sweaty nervous hands of high school journalists, and Nikon lenses hold up to that strain wonderfully.

I love this lens! As soon as I got it ,I couldent wait to give it a run for the money. Shot a soccer game and of the 45 shots I took all were in focus and sharp as a tack. Looking for a lens that wouldent drain my bank account, I found this one at a great price. Even though it didnt have image stabelisation,I had no trouble with the shoot.Every frame was in focus .It was a great buy [...] For a menium telephoto zoom , it was all I had hoped for.I didnt experience any problems at all. I would recomend this lens to anyone who wants a great lens on a tight budget.I also was pleased that it came with the lens hood.
