The Pentax 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED lens offers a wide four-times zoom ratio and offers focal lengths equivalent (in the 35mm format) from 76.5mm to 306mm. This wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery.
The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in PENTAX digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. (*) The new design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost, compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.
Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with SMC coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images.

I use this lens as a telephoto/macro. I take pictures of insects and other small objects that do not allow a close approach. Used on the Pentax k20d camera body, it allows great cropping with little or no loss of detail. The roughly 6 feet focusing distance at all focal lengths works well for this.

Slowness on the long end means you need decent light levels to make use of it.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
I am very impressed with this lens. I have not used any telephoto lens since my film days. The 200mm lens from my 35mm set up is big and heavy. This lens is hardly bigger than the standard lens that came with the Pentax K10. The lens is deceptively light.
The images are sharp and with the proper filters excellent results occur.
I definately recommend this lens.

This is a great beginner zoom lens and a perfect companion to the 18-55. You'll have to get used to switching lenses when necessary, but a great buy.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR:
I've used this lenes as a tele and macro (with a screw on lens). This thing is sharp! I did some heavy cropping with lightroom and the pic was still sharp. It is slow for some shooting but compared to lens that cost four times the price, this lens is really nice.

I do not have a daily use of telephotos, anyway when I need it I am happy to have one with me.
This one is very compact, so I can carry it with me any time, and the quality is fair with regard to the price.

A good buy for the price. I got mine when I purchased a Pentax K10 about 8 months ago. The lens is lightweight, sharp, focuses quickly and appears to have excellant optical results. I have used it indoors to photograph Basketball games[boosted to 1600 ASA] and outdoors for a variety of things; so far the photos have been excellant.

I've been using this lens for several months and I'm quite happy with it. I use it with a K100D and it is fast enough and bright enough for my needs. I can use it hand held at 200mm with shake reduction.Hard to catch this item in stock.
Expertise: Novice with 10 years SLR experience
Problems Encountered: I had trouble focusing on birds in a tree, the camera could not decide between the bird, foreground branches, or background. once I discovered the spot focus option it focuses exactly where I want.

I bought this lens to use with my K10D, and I am verysatisfied with the results. Colors are bright and clear, and the autofocus is pretty quick too. If you're lookingfor a great lens for medium distance shots and a greatprice, I would definitely go for with this one.
