The VXLR from Rode Microphones is an adapter that converts a 3.5mm mono mini jack input to a male XLR output. It can also accept a stereo input, but will send a mono signal to left and right channels.
The adapter is especially useful for the videographer who needs to have a microphone with a mini jack connect to an XLR input on a video camera.

This is the perfect adapter for any 3.5 to xlr situation. You can purchase these at your local Radio Shack, but their much longer and more inconvenient and most make you purchase an additional 1/8 adapter to connect to the 3.5 first. The fewer adapters you have in your chain the better. This adapter allows for a direct 3.5 to xlr connection.
It's about the same size as a standard male xlr piece, so you can't really tell it's an adapter.
If you want a clean signal and low profile look, then it's really a no brainer.

sfchuck is correct: this is not a "Mono Mini-Jack to XLR Converter" -- it should be described as a "Stereo 3.5mm Mini-Jack to Mono XLR Converter". The product's package makes this quite clear, and the B&H description is misleading. Rating this a 3/5 because mono microphones typically come with mono mini-jacks, not stereo mini-jacks -- what was Rode thinking?
If you have a microphone with a mono mini-jack like mine (Audio Technica ATR35s), you will need additional converter gadgets to make it all work. And then it works great. B&H appears to not offer the required mono-to-stereo mini-jack converter.
After seeing the product for myself, I believe sfchuck's remedy requires more skill than I have. This product is solidly built! Pulling it apart appears very difficult.

Comments about Rode VXLR - Mono Mini-Jack to XLR Converter:
It works immediatly and is a good thing to have if you have a stereo microphone and you need to convert it to xlr. I must say it's really to bad that it is a mono converter not a stereo, because my microphone is a stereo so it sorta down graded aha. I like it though, small compact and perfect!

I had been using an Audio-Technica XLR to Mini/F with my Rode Video mic and it failed in the field after just a few uses.
These adapters are reliable and help to avoid having to carry yet another specialized cable.

Comments about Rode VXLR - Mono Mini-Jack to XLR Converter:
I wanted to use this converter as a backup solution with my mic that has a mini stereo jack. However, the converter adds too much noise to the signal. Must be OK for amateur music, but not acceptable for speech analysis.
