This Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro compact high magnification zoom lens covers focal lengths from 28mm wide angle to 300mm supertelephoto, a 10.7x zoom ratio. It also offers a minimum focusing distance of 1.6' (50 cm) at all focal lengths and is equipped with a macro mechanism for close-up photography at 300mm telephoto, allowing a reproduction ratio of 1:3. This lens also incorporates two Special Low Dispersion Lens (SLD) elements, and four Aspherical elements, to correct for all types of aberrations.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.
This versatile, all-purpose zoom lens can capture a wide range of subjects using its wide angle, ultra-telephoto and close-up capabilities.

I'm using this lens for more than 6 months and more than 5 000 shots already fired. My opinion that this lens has a very good overall performance. Considering all the photos that I shot, about 80% of them are really good. Sharpness is great(lesser in extremes of 28mm and 300mm), but that's usual. Very useful zoom range, for general purposes, great for macro and portrait photography as well as wildlife and getting details from distance(maybe consider teleconverter 1.5x or 2.0x). More than bareable distortions and fringing at both soom ends. Very sharp auto and manual focusing, only a little problematic speed and low-light focusing especcialy at 300mm(you should switch to manula focusing at this circumstances anyway).
A little problem with lock switch after frequent use-you could extend zoom even when locked, but I solved this manually with a little twisting and adjusting the lock switch back to its place. I suggest using it with a good tripod at longer lenghts.
I would recommend this item, especcialy if you don't want or don't need something like Sigma 135-400mm, for a much more money.

Underwhelming Lens
This lens promises much, delivers less. The image at all focal lengths is degraded by substantial spherical aberration. Making the image appear to be sharp requires a huge amount of post-processing sharpening.

This also results in rather unpleasant bokeh. The "macro" focus is not as macro as I expected, meaning that close-ups aren't all that close.
No, I would not recommend this lens to a friend or to anyone.
In summary, this lens is best at gathering dust.

Comments about Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Autofocus Lens:
Given the wide zoom range on this, I wasn't expecting too much in the way of quality, but for the price, this lens is great. Cons are that it has a fairly noisy focus, and adjusting the zoom feels very stiff.
I'm an entry level photographer, and bought this for traveling so that I wouldn't have to keep changing lenses, and for that purpose it is excellent. Haven't been able to work out how to get good macro photos yet, though!

Use this as a walk-around lense but lense creeps a little, but no probs"just lock it". Nice replacement for my kit lense pentax 18-50mm WR. At this price, ZOOMS up to 300mm and a decent macro, it's a steal.

Comments about Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Autofocus Lens:
If you are looking for a quality lens with a better than average focal range, you should include this lens on your list.
I'm using this with Pentax digital bodies so it translates less as a wide super zoom than other lenses but even if you call it a 42-450mm lens, I like it a lot more than others.
The color and contrast are good. The compact overall size of the lens also gets high marks. If you want a somewhat compact lens with a long range in focal lengths, you could spend more money on others yet still get images to compare with this Sigma.
This is a great lens for times when you may not know what to expect to find and only want to carry the bare essentials.
The pros and cons of the lens may vary with different camera manufacturer and models of course. I would not say it is slow to find a focus point but it certainly could be a little faster and confident. The zoom ring makes getting to the A setting of the aperture a little difficult. Having this lens will allow me to sell three other lenses in this focal range with no regret whatsoever. I am not saying replace all your lenses with this one but it is a great lens to have when you want to run light.

Rapid auto focus. Quiet. Photo clarity is second to none. Exceptional low light quality. Wish that I'd gotten this lens years ago! Superior construction, light weight, it makes an average photographer look like a pro!

Due to the low price for this lens I thought I was going to get an average quality lens but this Sigma 28-300mm lens has proven to have great clarity. I do have slight problems with lens creep though. I use this lens for all around photography, from nature to portrait, and am well pleased with the quality and price.

Great lens for travel photography due to compact size - wide zoom range lets you carry one lens. Not sharp at the extremes of the focal range but even more expensive lenses suffer the same fault.

I use this lens for bird photography. The images are clear and sharp, no distortion whatsoever. I love it. I particularly like the way it manages to focus quickly on a subject, even when the subject is surrounded by dense brush!
I have no negative comments whatsoever regarding this lens.

I bought this lens just before heading down to the Laguna Seca motorcycle race about a month ago. I like how compact it is for a long range telephoto. Quality is top notch!
The only fault I found was that the lens would easily extend on its own if I had the camera slung over my shoulder walking around. Doesnt happen on my Pentax lenses.

I was excited to pair this lens with my K10D, but have beenmildly disappointed with the image quality. Yes, it is veryconvenient to have a 28-300 zoom, but you pay for thatconvenience with mediocre image quality. I can recommendthis lens, but be sure to keep your expectations realistic.
Expertise: Amatuer
Problems Encountered: Sketchy auto-focus, especially in low light.
Comments about Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Autofocus Lens:
Bought this lens as an inexpensive travel lens for a Canon 5d. Aside from its compact size, there isn't much good about this lens. Horrible image quality all around. Pass on it.
Problems Encountered: Inferior image quality. Poor autofocus & manual focus.
Comments about Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Autofocus Lens:
This is a great walk around lens for the K10D, with a 10X zoom range. It would be a great lens to substitute the kit lens with & still keep the whole kit purchase price around $1000. I'm very happy with the image quality & the way the zoom barrel feels. I recommend it highly.
Problems Encountered: None.
