This unit works better than its performance description reads. It says it is NOT for mini-dv tapes but erases them easily and thoroughly,at a very fast speed (seconds). Great purchase.

Erasing mini DV tapes, only takes about 10-15 sec. per tape and is effortless. Brings them right back to a blue screen.

I have a number of Sony & Canon Digital Master HDV tapes (40) that contain video that I have downloaded to my computer. I wanted to use them again, but I wanted to clean them up first. I purchased the 2800 Gauss Handheld Tape Eraser from B&H. Following the directions, I erased a few tapes, popped one back in the camera and voula Clean as a Whistle. The cleaned tape shows blue in the camera LCD screen and NO time code (just like a new tape).
The 2800 Gauss Handheld Tape Eraser performed just as I had hoped it would. It fits comfortable in either hand (I am left handed) and takes only seconds to work it's magic.
I have three HD cameras 1 Canon and 2 Sony and the tapes do not appear to have lost any visible recording quality with any of them.
I erased enough in my first session to pay for the unit.
