This makes shooting vertical much easier. Having the extra battery extends shooting time a lot. Also, if you happen to be shooting a lot, the AA battery magazine (holds 6 AA batteries) that comes with it has saved me on multiple occasions and bought me some time to get all of my Li-Ion batteries recharged.
The cons of this grip are trivial and almost not worth mentioning, but I will anyways.
The grip and the extra battery add some extra weight, it's noticeable but not a detriment to the grip. And when shooting vertical, the multi-selector is impossible to reach with your thumb, so no more discreetly reaching over to change your focus area without pulling the camera down from your face.

After reading all the rave reviews I decided it was time to buy a battery grip. I'm glad I waited and bought it used (in great condition, thank you Canon owners! and B&H!) since I paid about half of the new price.
I'm glad I waited because I won't use this very often, but not because I don't take portraits. I just don't like it. First of all it just looks goofy, while throwing the balance off so that the camera doesn't stand upright anymore. But I could live with the looks; it's the size and the weight that make it a non-starter for me. I'm keeping it for portrait sessions, period. Walk around with it attached? No way. If I wanted a 1-series I would've bought a 1-series. The great thing about the 5D is its size, getting a FF sensor inside a small, lightweight body.
With 2 batteries the BG-E4 adds over 50% more weight. The grip is 10.2oz empty and 15.4oz with 2 batteries, which is more than half the weight of the 5D.
But it's not only heavy, this grip is just too big. Yes it's great to have the buttons where you want them for portraits. But adding 2 inches in height completely negates the best feature of the 5D, namely its relatively small size (for a FF camera).
I wish Canon would design an addition for the 5D line that simply adds the portrait button functionality without the cumbersome battery holder. That would be a great tool. Batteries aren't expensive and they last for hundreds of shots. Imagine an attachment that only added a 1/2" in height instead of 2". Imagine it weighed the same as one battery, about 3oz instead of 15oz.
Just give us the buttons Canon, please! (and no silly separate on/off switch like the BG-E4 has. Talk about goofy...!).
I'm glad everyone else loves it. It is a handy tool. But to me the 5D is so good because it delivers images on par with the pro bodies but isn't a big, heavy 1-series camera. I think 99% of the time I'll keep it that way...

give more grip to 5D, more weight, make it more proportional and the act to click in vertical become easy.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
Great addition to the 5D, Only regret is that I did not buy this one when I first got my 5D. No cons from me, but i guess some could argue about the addional weight and size. To me the better balance easily justifies the additional weight. Especialy handy for vertical pictures, whith additional shutter button and main dial.

I never had the experience of running out of juice again,(Happen to me twice), missing some very important scenes. Added weight is not so great but peace of mind outweighs everything when taking pictures.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
One thing that I worried a bit was the additional weight it put on the camera. But after I put it on I found it makes the camera/lens actually balance better - and no matter which lens I mount ( 50/1.4, 28-70/2.8L, or 70-200/4L), it gives me one more stop at one slower shutter speed setting. The extra mass absorbs some of the mirror's vibration. It is beautifully made, same light weight metal construction as the 5D. A must-have with any 5D.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
Some noticable difference in the shutter speed, or continuity when on shoots. The weight takes a little getting use to and the vrtical grip is a little large for my hands. I still use the horizontal trigger for shooting, maybe out of habit?
Overall, wish I had bought it a year ago when I bought the camera, very affordable, and useful.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
I have a 20D, a 40D and a 5D. All have battery grips. I find that besides the extended battery life and vertical shutter release, the cameras are simply easier to use. The extra weight gives me a steadier platform. Without the grips, the cameras don't fit my hand right.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
The battery grip is essential for a long day of shooting. I recently photographed a wedding for over ten hours without having to change batteries. This was such an amazing difference from having to change my camera battery several times. Also having the vertical grip for vertical images is a sweet bonus! A must have for any professional!

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
Overall, I am totally satisfied with this purchase. It provides the perfect balance with any lens attached, and is perfectly contoured with the size of my hand. It also enables me to take vertical shots much more easily, and the extra battery definitely comes in handy, especially when using a flash to fill or in the studio.Aesthetically, the camera looks much more robust and professional with the vertical grip attached.I've used the product for about a month now and I have absolutely no buyer's remorse, except for not purchasing it sooner.[...]

I use it now with NiMh rechargeable batterries.
It is solid and well made ergonomically.
When reading the instructions I was baffled seeing that it can be used only with AA Alkaline batterries and of course with the camera's LiIon batteries.
My other batt. grip BG-E2 works well with NiMh AA rechargeable batterries.
I asked myself why this not?
Being baffled and needing help asked Canon and B&H.
From both the quieting answer was that I can use AA NiMh batterries.
Of course it worked well.
I ask Canon why this baffling instruction able to confuse customers and make them to regret purchasing this battery grip?

Nice to have vertical shutter release.
Grip hold is very wide and after several hours of continuous shooting it feels uncomfortable and too wide. It would be nice if it had a grip formation more molded to hand shape.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
The only problem I've come across is that if I turn it on before I turn on my camera and auto focus doesn't work correctly (it fires w/o focusing). But other then that, the battery life is great and it's easier to shoot vertical.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
The BG-E4 completes the 5D's makeup. It improves the cameras handling as much as motor drives did to film bodies of the past. My vertically composed photos are much sharper since I can maintain the horizontal shooting position using the grips shutter button. I currently use both the 85mmf/1.2L II and 300mm f/2.8L IS lenses with the grip. Not only do I benefit from the improved handling, but since both lenses are battery thirsty, the double battery capacity of the grip satisfies both lenses power needs well. I recommend buying two new batteries with the grip and use them only in the grip. This will give you the best power/performance and longevity of the BP-511A cells. Highly recommended.

Comments about Canon BG-E4 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
I keep the BG-E4 on my 5D all the time; it has never been removed since I received it from B&H. I love the battery life and the vertical controls as I never find myself contorting my arms to frame a shot. I do wish that the BG-E4 were able to sense the on/off status of the 5D instead of having a second on/off switch just to enable the vertical buttons. When I have a 580 EX II attached, I find myself turning 3 switches to 'on' before I take a picture (flash, 5D, BG-E4). In the end, it's a minor annoyance compared to the nice benefit of battery life and controls!
