Like many beginning photographers, I was (and still am)unable to afford an expensive macro lens, so I purchasedthis Kenko set of extension tubes. As advertised, they can turn just about any lens into amacro lens, at much less of a cost than buying a separatemacro lens. When you place the extension tube(s) between the camera bodyand the regular lens, the effect is amazing. First, itgreatly reduces the maximum focus distance -- you can nolonger focus on objects far away. At the same time, it alsoreduces the minimum focus distance -- you can focus onobjects much closer than before.Secondly, the depth-of-field because markedly narrower, requiring a stopping down of the lens (higher f-number) inmost cases. The only real down-side to this is that you almost alwayshave to use a tripod because of longer exposure times, andauto-focus rarely works.

      Expertise: Semi-professional photojournalist

Problems Encountered: I had hoped to use auto-focus with these tubes installed, but I can't (on Canon dSLRs). Most shots require a tinyaperture (high f-number), which forces a slower shutterspeed, making the use of a tripod almost always necessary.Occasionally, I've been able to use them hand-held and withAF, but only in bright sunlight with a very fast (wideaperture) lens.

Items I Recommend: Any prime lens 50mm or longer

I have not tried the extention tube for any macro photography but I was disappointed in the quality for the price. When the extention tubes are mounted on the camera there is no rattling of the levers but when loose in the box the black flat levers slide back and forth, especially on the 36mm and make a distinct rattling noise...just annoying but I presume the magnification aspect is ok for macro photography.

I have been using these for about 10 days now and the results have been MORE than I expected. The tubes work perfectly with my Sony A700, it focuses on the subject as though the tube was not even there.

This was pretty cool to play around with. Was able to turn a 24mm into a macro lens and actually see the pixels of a computer screen. Haven't had an opportunity to use these extensively, but works as expected.
