Comments about Celestron VistaPix 8x22 Binocular with 3.0 MP Digital Camera with Video/Audio and 1.5" LCD Display:

There are now many binocular/digital camera combos available today. Most are bad. Anything $30 and under is outright junk, don't waste your time. Even more expensive units may have poorly mounted cameras, or really cheap bino optics, or good binos and a cheap camera etc. This unit come close to the best of both worlds. The Pros: Right now this unit is a good buy at only [$] (they were [$] when I purchased them). The binoculars are solid, they have independent eyepiece focus, and will flex to fit even narrow-set eyes (many of these devices won't do this). The digital camera is a true 3MP (it can also be set to 5MP interpolated), it is solidly mounted to the binos, it includes a flip-up 1.5" color LCD monitor, and an SD card slot (although an SD card is NOT included). The digital camera's software, while not being super-easy to see or use on the only 1.5" monitor, with a little patience it will get the job done (basically you set it and forget it).The Cons: Biggest is this - Because the camera does NOT use the bino's optics (none of these bino/cameras do, they're just pointed in exactly the same place) you have to set the camera's digital zoom until what you see in the LCD monitor matches what you see in the bino's eyepiece. AND, you have to re-do this each time you turn them off & on. Not as hard as it sounds, but still annoying. Also, unlike how it's pictured, you HAVE to screw a large telephoto lens onto the camera (and use the digital zoom a bit) in order for the camera/bino's images to match each other. This is annoying because:a) They don't fit back in the case with this lens attached.b) It makes the camera aspect less "stealthy" if you know what I mean. :)All in all this is still about the best entry level bino/camera unit I've found. Even with its shortcomings I'm still satisfied with it.
