I bought this pack mostly because I thought it looked cool, and I hoped the grip might encourage me to use the portrait orientation more often, such as for wide-angle shots of trees, and other things I hadn't typically been doing. It does, indeed, look cool, and the extra shutter release is handy. But the pack became a necessity after I added a couple of VR lenses (I am an inveterate fiddler with the VR, so I waste a lot of juice.)
Compared to my old N8008, the D200 feels heavy, even without the pack, and with the pack on it takes a lot of space in my bag. But the extra weight helps to balance a 70-200/2.8 VR, and with that combo, an extra pound or two seems academic, anyway.
I really appreciate the AA holder. Having it loaded with six lithium batteries in my bag is a real confidence builder, although I've never actually needed it. On the rare occassions I've drained the two batteries in the pack, I've just used my spare EN-EL3e (I bought a couple with the holder, so the one that came with the camera is my spare.)
I have to agree that the construction isn't as robust as the camera itself, and on occassions when I prefer to work without the pack, putting the battery case cover back on the camera feels a bit touchy. No mishaps, so far, but the little hinge tabs look pretty fragile. I do like that the grip has a handy place to store the cover. I also appreciate the option to turn the vertical release off, because I have tripped it accidently a couple of times. (At least I'm not wasting film when it happens, though.)
In short, it's a very good, albeit imperfect, accessory. And it really does look kinda cool...

The MB-D200 is very convenient when using the camera hand held in portrait orientation. For me it is much more natural to just shift my right hand to the vertical grip and to hold the camera with one hand on the lens and the other on the side rather than having my right hand under the camera and right in front of my face as it has to be when the MB-D200 is not installed. The added weight results in a steadier system and helps balance heavier lenses.
There are many not so great features of the MB-D200: the tendency of the camera attachment to loosen spontaneously; the play between the camera and the grip and the general flimsiness of the grip construction that for me rule out mounting the grip directly on a tripod; the worrisome undersized battery cover latch and battery retaining clips that have earned a reputation for breaking off with normal use. My MB-D200 also continues to drain the batteries while the camera is turned off and not in use. The grip invariably stays at home if the environmental conditions are going to be rough or if I cannot afford to lose irreplaceable shots because of camera malfunction: its poor build quality and engineering do not inspire any confidence in its reliability.

Loved this grip - great for my portrait shooting. Only down side is the little plastic feet that lock the rechargeable batteries into place snapped off after 3 years. I just closed the door in locked them in anyway and it worked fine for 1 month then the plastic door lock snapped so I used tape to keep the door shut. But I have to say it's time for a new one so I'm not going to a shoot with taped up McGyver camera.

I shoot mainly flash photographs with a 17-70 lens. With the added wight of the flash the larger lens made the D-200 a little unbalanced. The battery pack adds more weight which makes the D-200 feel more balanced. The larger size grip also gives you a better handle on camera control.

I have fiund this to be a most helpful product. I shoot in camera flash with a slave off camera flash. The multi-power pack allows me to continue shooting when otherwise I would have to stop and change camera batteries.

I love the extra battery life I have for my camera by using the MB-D200 battery pack. Knowing that I can shoot for hours at a time without stopping to change the battery is great. The BEST feature for me, though, is the vertical fire button. I enjoy the flexibility of having two shutter release buttons.
Definitely worth the money!
I must say, this is my second one. I had the first one for four and a half years. The only drawback I had was the little plastic pieces that hold the batteries in wear out and break off. That is why I purchased this second (replacement)battery pack.

Former professional in Photography, now retired for 10 years. The MB-D200 was a gift. I acquired a D200 in Spring 2009 for serious amateur work. Previously used an N90S with the Multi-function back. My current shooting required carrying extra batteries and several times the option for using AAs would have been desirable. The MB-D200 battery grip adds balance to an already great camera. Extending battery life is key when shooting sporting events, wildlife or during cold weather, when you might not have time to stop to change batteries. Continuously shooting in Portrait mode is made easy by adding this battery grip. I have found the shutter release to be very similar in feel to the one on the camera body.

Over the last 2 years I have taken the MB-D200 on several trips ranging from 7-14 days. With 2 charged batteries I have never run out of juice taking as many images as I want in places such as Pictured Rocks, Mi and Collegiate Peaks, Co.
The vertical grip and shutter release makes switching from landscape to portrait seamless.
The little white tabs that secure the batteries broke off on my first MB-D200 - but closing the battery door rendered this a moot point.
Attaching to the camera is quick and easy and the tripod mount on the bottom functions flawlessly and is rugged enough to handle the rigors of constantly attaching and detaching a tripod.

it usually works great but sometimes when using AA alkaline batteries after one or two shots the camera will show no battery on brand new ones and won't focus or shoot. this gets to be very frustrating as you have to turn the power on and off. it seems to work fine with the EN-el3e battery from nikon.i found i wasn't the only one with this problem by checking on [@]

Love not carrying batteries in my pocket! This dual battery grip allows for longer shooting times, great for long exposures, as well as a better handle on the camera. The only fault is the little plastic clips that hold the batteries in place break easily and are expensive to replace. Remove and place batteries with care.
