The Nikon AS-20 Speedlight Stand is used to hold the SB-R200 flash head when it's not used with the SX-1 Attachment Ring.

Comments about Nikon AS-20 Speedlight Stand for SB-R200 Flash Head:
Original stand included with the SB-R200. Note that the SB-R200 does not have a normal shoe mount, so this is the only stand that is going to work.
The Nikon SX-1 ring will accept up to 8 SB-R200 speedlights. You might not know that the SX-1 ring can be attached to the AS-20 speedlight stand. (Normally the SX-1 is attached to a lens).
To the previous reviewer, my R1 kit included two of the AS-20 stands.
The AS-20 stand is tapped so it can be mounted to any tripod.
My very minor complaint is that the AS-20 is a light-grey color rather than black.

Comments about Nikon AS-20 Speedlight Stand for SB-R200 Flash Head:
Who am I to question Nikon, but there is only one of these stands that comes with the really neat R1 kit. The kit has two, yes two, SB-R200 lights, but only one stand! The AS-20 stand is useful because it enables one to use the SB-R200 lights on a tripod (the feet on the SB-R200 won't fit a normal hot shoe), and for those of us that have macro lenses that can't use the R1 ring adapter, like the 70-180mm Micro, the ability to use the flash units on a tripod is a definite plus.
Luckily, all the components of the R1 kit can be purchased separately. Thanks, Nikon!
