I bought the 500G Q drive last month. It's a great drive. Someone from February bashed this drive for some very odd reasons. He wanted an external drive that shuts down when computer is shut off. External drives don't shut down when you shut off your pc. The off switch is very accessible. Also that the drive is too loud. It's one of the quietest on the market and I have a variety from Maxtor, Seagate, etc from 100G to 1T sizes. This drive is not at all obtrusive. I've used it for 20 hours straight with 100's of Gigs of data transfer and it is very fast and never gets more than slightly warm to the touch. I'm a pro level user of still and video and this drive does everything you would want.Definite 5 star purchase and from B&H with their service standards I have no worries.

That'll be twice now.It's noisy and the drive light could be used to navigate ships in the night.So don't take it for granted that G-tech drives are the only choice.

The G-Drive Qs are blazing fast: Use the FireWire 800 port and (if you're on a Mac) format it to be unjournaled and it will keep up with even the most demanding video work. Although it's a little chatty (lots of "chewing on data" sounds), it makes up for that minor annoyance both by its performance and by the fact that it just plain looks cool: I've got a stack of them next to my aluminum iMac (one for Time Machine back-ups; two for video and Photoshop scratch), and they look like they came in the box with the computer!

I'm a professional multimedia artist and was directed to purchase this drive from a trusted editor friend. The drive is very fast, extremely quiet and quite affordable. I bought two 500 gigs. Then was at a fashion shoot and noticed that they did all of their digital capture as well as backup on set to the drives. This confirmed that they are reliable. I bought two more, and will buy my fifth today.
I think it makes sense to get the model with firewire 800 because you get more connection options.
Anyway, I use it for editing, music production and backup storage. Works great on all fronts. I agree the bricks are a bit cumbersome. That, and the very bright light on the front, are my only beefs.

I use external drives as weekly bootable duplicates of my internal boot drive and as daily backup archives of my internal data. This is my second G-Drive Quad and so far have not been able to find a more dependable drive for this type of critical work. I have had LaCie & Seagate drives just suddenly stop working once they cleared their 1 year warranty period. This G-Drive Quad has a 3 year warranty and my other G-Drive Quad is going strong after 2 + years.
I have nothing to complain about with these great drives.

I use this product as a scratch drive with my Macbook Pro and Final Cut Express. This product is extremely fast with the Firewire 800 port.
The product is built well and is in a metal casing. the only downside is that it is kind of heavy for its size, but I will be buying another in the new future as my storage needs expand.

This drive is great for working with audio. It allows me to stream a lot of channels from my Motu Ultralite and my Motu 828 MKII at the same time. I tested it with the USB and the FW400 and FW800 interfaces, and all have great transfer rates and stability. It is a very quiet device, but not a completely silent one. I guess that adding an eSata Express Card to my Macbook Pro will improve it more, but for me it's ok right now. It will be great if the drive could be powered from the FW busses, but I think in that case it will be impossible to keep the drive cool as it is. The front light is a little bit annoying on the night.

I am a photographer and I use G-Tech drives to archive my images. I own two of these G-Drive Q's in particular. Very reliable. Quiet. Quick. Easy to use...just plug it in and go! Firewire 800 is great and there's always the option of using them in a RAID system. Can't go wrong with this drive.

I spent weeks researching external hard drives and interviewing owners and users of various drives and found this to be "the best" out there. It's fast, it's got more interfaces than you know what to do with, it looks good and it's very very quiet. I haven't encountered any problems, but I've only been using it for 3 or 4 weeks now. A friend purchased a Western Digital MyBook at the same time I purchased my G-Drive. I almost bought the MyBook, but I'm glad I didn't. My friend isn't entirely satisfied with it and there's something about them that seems suspect. What I don't like about the G-Drive is the power switch. It feels shoddy, like it's going to come loose at some point and be a huge headache.
