The VP-1 from TL Audio is a single channel, tube based channel strip that functions as a direct link between microphone and multi-track recorder, enabling the engineer to capture the highest quality vocal sound on tape or hard disc without the compromises in sound quality that most mixing consoles impose.
The VP-1 features the choice of pentode valve or Class A signal paths followed by a expander/gate, de-esser, compressor and four band EQ with two fully parametric mid frequency bands.
The unit employs seven valve stages, run from a stabilized 250VDC supply. The first stage is a Siemens EF86 pentode in the front end of the preamp, followed by six Sovtek ECC83/12AX7A stages, one in the secondary stage of the preamp, one in the compressor and four in the EQ section.
Preamp
- Accepts mic, instrument and line level signals

- Both tube and optical compression circuits with control of threshold, ratio, attack, release and gain make-up.

- Tube based EQ section with Low/High Frequency shelving with two fully parametric Mid Bands

Limiter
- Employs an optical gain control stage with adjustable threshold to provide responsive yet natural control of output peaks, ideal for preventing overload in digital recorders
- By-passable and an "active" LED indicates when limiting is taking place
- "Stereo Link" switch allows two VP-1s to be joined for stereo operation and ensures that the compressor and limiter control voltages are linked, preventing image shift
General
- Output level control offers full attenuation through to +15dB of gain and can act as an output fader for direct-to-multitrack recording
- A large back-lit VU meter can be switched to read input gain, output gain and gain reduction
- An "o/p +10" setting pads the meter reading down by 10dB to permit very high output levels to be effectively monitored
