Bring the Logitech Harmony H890 Remote Control home today and set aside your clutter of remotes from the living room. This easy-to-use advanced universal remote uses both radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) wireless signals to control HDTV, DVD player, VCR, A/V receiver and other components. This remote features a color LCD screen and fully back-lit buttons that even allows you to enjoy your entertainment system in the dark. You can control up to 15 devices including lighting and household devices. This remote has an attractive recharging station for its lithium-ion battery.
The Harmony Remote 890 sends RF signals through walls and doors to control equipments in other rooms or concealed in hidden cabinets. The range for RF is 100'. You must use the wireless receiver to convert RF to IR in order to control devices using H890 via RF. In order to setup H890, use the Harmony setup Wizard for both Windows and Mac computers. Use the USB interface to connect to the computer and update the remote - the remote database is constantly updated with new components. This remote has a handy "HELP" for simple troubleshooting.

I use this product to control a home theatre system with a MS Vista media centre PC(home assembled), Marantz AV receiver, Samsung LCD TV, Sanyo VCR and a Sanyo Projector. All but the IR extender and the PC run off a power board remote that is transparently remote controlled via the 890 and X10 home automation equipment.
I enjoy technical gear and dont like to think I cant solve a problem (although there have been plenty of those).
Getting one of these remote running with a simpler Home Theatre system is relatively simple. The power board control and the second display device (projector) made setting up more complex. I've done it and I love using this remote now it's all setup! My 5year old daughter uses this remote. We dont use any others.it daily.
I bought my first Harmony remote with the promise that if I did not like it, then bring it back within a week. That was the 520 which did not cost much. I spent time setting it up making tweaks and adjustments to solve minor problems as they arose but decided it was worthwhile. The biggest problem was that sometimes my DVD or TV would miss a signal and then you needed to go through a simple but attention taking help sequence to get all the equipment back in synch.
Buying the 890 has solved my problems as fitting the IR transmitters to the fron of my equipment from the IR extender unit that receives the RF signals from the 890 has made signalling extremely reliable.
Against advice in the User Guide, I've used the 890 to switch standby power on/off to my equipment when not in use using a Martek IR controller for X10 home automation also.
I am totally satisfied and wrapped in this product but not without some serious trial and error in getting the unit programmed.
Once you learn the quirks, it gets easier until the next one. I've done a lot of research reading reviews and I've not found a better remote control with the versatility the 890 has.
Logitech have more to simplify the programming experience but I've got to rate this 5 stars as I've not found a better one.

I have two H890s - one at home and one on the yacht I captain. They work pretty well but the problems outweigh the performance. Getting the button sequencing to work with some hardware is a challenge: the DirectTV control box and the Harmony don't like each other - one button push translates to multiple responses from DirectTV box and sometimes the Bose Lifestyle responds and sometimes it doesn't. Harmony (and Logitech) claim the Bose Lifestyle doesn't receive IR but it does so they need to update their database. The adhesive on the IR bugs doesn't stick for beans - if it comes off once (to move it or by chance) you'll never get it to stick again.
It is not a learning remote - it has a help key to correct any problems but if the same problem occurs over and over again you'll need to reprogram it or update the firm ware or some other such thing requiring hours at your computer.
My 890 at home will randomly reboot itself and when this occurs everything gets powered down (not just the remote). This is a pain in the _ss.
I saw a review where there was trouble w/ MAC OS - I have no problems w/ my G4 and OS 10.5.5.
The online programing is fairly easy but to fine tune things forget about it. For example: to add a command to turn on your amp and TV and set the amp to the AUX input in front to run a CamCorder or digital camera is a nightmare for you're not selecting a device to run from that jack. So I had to make something up such as using and X-Box. Then I get the commands laid down and plug in the camera. It should allow you to create a random action without installing an end device.
Battery life if OK. Buttons are awkward and small. When it works it's awesome. When it doesn't it you'll hate it. When it doesn't work you have to bust out the individual remotes and on the boat that's a problem. I have the DirectTV box and the XM Radio controller behind the Plasma TV in a small hatch - it's not a job where I can stay on the couch and fix things.
All in all they need to fine tune the thing and iron out the problems and glitches. I recommend it with reservations. Putting all your remotes into one is great but it's not a Crestron - thats for sure.

This the smartest remote I have ever seen, it makes my older harmony look childish. The RF feature solved all my problems and I was thrilled to get it at this price.

This remote is for the technologically savy. You don't need to be an electronics expert to figure out but if you are a baby boomer generaly it might be a little much.
It it very easy to program with a computer, the program takes you step by step on how to do everything. Customer service is available over the phone is case you get in a jam. I still haven't.
Once you set everything up chances are you will not need to go back to do anything. I programmed my over a year ago and only had to go back recently because I changed my blu ray player.
Very reliable and useful little fellow. It really enhances your hometheater experience. No more fumbling 10 remotes or remembering video or audio inputs to enjoy simple tasks as: watching tv or a movie.
Enjoy

Comments about Harmony/Logitech H890 Home Theater Remote Control - USB:
This remote is truly excellent in overall performance. It gives you the features found in high-end overpriced models in a very affordable package.
There is a button lag that takes some time to get used to although there is a way of fixing this. It gives you the option to change technical settings to reduce the wait time in between button commands. The sequence commands on the main screen are performed flawlessly if you have done the setup correctly.
Dont get discouraged if it takes you a few trips to the computer after you have done the programming a few times. It is part of the process of setting up due to the fact that you will find you want more customized options just about everytime you sit in front of the TV set.
After you are finished setting everything up its like a magic wand. All you want to do with all your remote controls you can do from the Harmony in a very simple way.
I bought mine about 10 months ago and haven't had to go back to the computer to set anything since I did it when I bought the unit.
I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a truly modern universal remote control in an affordable package.
It makes the wife happy since there is no more fumbling between 6 different remote controls, with the push of a button your Harmony sets all your componets up for: watching TV, listening to music, or watching a DVD, etc. When you are done push the off button and your harmony takes care of turning off all your components one by one.
Enjoy!

I was hoping the 890 was the remote for all situations(IR and RF), but I was disappointed by the small activity buttons, hard to view screen, and slow reaction time.
The setup was easy, but the activity menu isn't very intuitive.
I was going to return this item, but it's beyond the 15day return policy.
If you don't need RF, then look for another device.

The ability for the remote to convert to RF rodks!!! I am able to keep all of our AV equipment locked behind a cabinet so that our toddler can't get into it. The RF enables me to use my receiver, TV, DVD player, etc. with the cabinet doors closed. The interface is very intuitive once you get the device programmed. Programming is not as easy as the writeups indicate. I still have not figured how to install my X10 system on the remote so that I can turn my lights on / off at the push of a button.

I never thought I would pay this much for a remote control...but I really wanted the RF ability to be able to control sound volume in different rooms. Setup was a breeze and I am surprised on the both the simplicity of setup and the amount of control you can have.
