Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

The rubber lens hood works like any metal lens hood, but allows you to fold it in and put on a lens cap, which is not possible with a metal hood. I therfore recommend this hood as an extremely convenient solution when you are out in the field with your camera. Highly recommended.

My 50mm/f1.4 Pentax lens is one of my favorites. The first lens hood I had for it was a square hood that had its own little case because it did not store on the lens--it worked fine but I lost it on a trip. This one is more compact and seems to work just as well. I can leave it on the lens or store it in a pocket of my camera bag. My only complaint is that it tends to slide off when I pull the lens from the bag--but I just pop it back on.

Easy to use and easy to store. You can keep it on the lens all the time and just fold it when you want more space to store. It's great to use with Normal SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lens.

A very simple item that greatly improves images from my FA50/1.4. If using a polarizing or other filter the hood screws into the top threads of the filter so filter use is not limited. The filter folds up for storage on or off the lens. Definitely worth while.

I love the pop-in pop-out functionality of this hood. It works really well. A simple touch and it just pops down into the folded configuration. Pulling it slightly pops it back out.
The only slight possible downside is that if you have a tight camera bag, when you insert the camera the grippy rubber hood could catch on the fabric and try to fold the hood back over itself. Not a big deal at all though.

I took off one star for price. Otherwise, I would have given this hood fives stars. Nicely made, heavy duty and has a metal screw mount. It's a lot less bulky on my Pentax FA50 than the generic rubber hood I had previously, so I just leave this hood on the lens all the time.
