Sleek, stylish, and loaded with features, the high-end Pentax Optio A10 Digital Camera, with 8.0 megapixels of resolution, and a 3X zoom lens, offers the pinnacle of compact digital photography. the Optio A10 is also the first Pentax compact digital with an innovative Shake Reduction system to help ensure sharper images in situations where camera shake typically causes blurred images such as telephoto or indoor shots without a flash. The Pentax Optio A10 also features DivX, a fully Certified Encoder device that captures full-screen VGA (640 x 480, 30 fps) video. Equipped with DivX, the Optio A10 allows users to capture, create, play and share high-quality video content across a range of other DivX equipped devices and platforms such as DVD players, recorders and portable media players.

Large CCD for High Image Quality
The Optio A10 is equipped with a large 1/1.8-inch CCD boasting 8.32 total megapixels. With about 1.6 times the light receiving area of many other compact camera CCDs, this large CCD offers advantages in superior tone reproduction, texture delineation, and noise reduction.
High-Performance smc Pentax Zoom Lens
Constructed from seven elements in five groups, including three double-sided aspherical lenses, the newly developed smc PENTAX zoom lens produces clear, high-contrast images. This design corrects effectively for spherical and other aberrations and our original coating cuts out ghosting and flare. Furthermore, Pentax's proprietary Sliding Lens System offsets the central lens groups from the optical axis and houses the lenses in two separate stages in the lens barrel to reduce the overall lens length and thereby minimize the body depth.
Elegant, Stylish Design
The beautiful form of the Optio A10 is attained through numerous refinements such as the highly textured aluminum alloy exterior, the 12-faceted accent lens ring, and the connector cover designed to blend in with the camera. While exuding a sense of style and sophistication, the design has not overlooked the camera's grip or operability. The position of each control component has been optimized through operational tests and a Handing indentation has been added to the left side of the camera's topside surface - making the camera more comfortable to handle.
Improved ASIC Processor
The ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) supplies the Optio A10 with incredible image-processing power. Thanks to the ASIC's high-speed processing capability, the Optio A10 attains a higher level of tone reproduction and color correction based on enormous amounts of actual photo data.
SR (Shake Reduction) System
The Pentax Shake Reduction system really comes into its own in shooting conditions that are sensitive to camera shake, such as telephoto shots or indoor shots without a flash. The Shake Reduction mechanism is made possible by two internal gyro sensors that detect camera shake while a dedicated CPU calculates the required correction to compensate for the level of camera shake while focusing. In turn, a proprietary mechanism adjusts the CCD automatically based on the calculation and compensates for the camera shake to help deliver sharper images.
Precise Autofocus Features
The Optio A10 includes a Pan-focus function for effortless snapshots and a tracking AF function assure you will never miss a shot. There is also a built-in AF-assist light (can be switched on or off) for precise focus in low light.
Intuitive Mode Palette
The Mode Palette, which lists various modes on the LCD monitor, lets you quickly and expertly navigate through and select from the 15 shooting modes and 15 playback modes. And by using the translucent through display, which superimposes mode icons over the LCD monitor image, changing settings while framing the subject could not be easier.
Auto Picture Mode
The Auto Picture Mode makes taking photos even easier and even more fun. Selecting the Auto Picture Mode from the shooting Mode Palette has the camera automatically select the mode from Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, or Standard according to the shooting conditions. Candlelight mode allows high-sensitivity shooting at a Standard Output Sensitivity of 800
High-Quality Movie Mode
The Optio A10 smoothly captures movies at 30 fps at sizes up to 640x480 pixels with image quality rivaling camcorders. Since it employs the DivX MPEG-4 movie format, the Optio A10 can record longer, high-quality movies. Camera shake can also be corrected automatically by switching on the Movie anti-Shake feature.
High-Definition, Easy-to-view LCD Monitor
Despite its slimness, the Optio A10 manages to fit in a large, 2.5-inch High resolution LCD monitor that is easy to see even in bright locations because of its bright backlight and low-reflection coating. All of this means it is easier to navigate menus, make settings, and compose shots as well as to display crisper, more beautiful images. Convenient image-rotation display for confirmation of vertical shots
Built-In Memory
The camera includes 24 MB of built-in memory so users can begin shooting immediately without the need for additional memory. The camera also supports Secure Digital (SD) memory cards to expand the memory capacity.
Convenient Charging Stand
The convenient charging stand included with the camera recharges a lithium-ion battery in the camera and can also charge a spare battery simultaneously.

Out for Service

By Alan

from Roebling, NJ

Comments about Pentax Optio A10 Digital Camera:

I purchased this camera as a second camera to take with me all the time. This compact camera is fairly easy to use, and has some nice features that allow the user to take some nice pictures from a very small camera. The manual focus feature is nice, but it's a bit difficult to do. I have a larger camera, but this camera can go with me virtually everywhere, and it's considerably better photo quality than a camera phone.

Problems Encountered: About 3 months after purchase, (October 2006) the lens began to freeze when it adjusted for zoom, causing the camera to shut down. I thought maybe it was a battery issue, and continued to use the camera. The problem became worse, and the lens stopped retracting when shutting down, and I had constant problems with the camera shutting off on it's own. I contacted Pentax for warranty repair work, and was told to ship the camera to their repair facility and that repairs would take 8 weeks or more. I am fairly disappointed with this camera.

Little control for "high end" Pentax

By DHRoberts

from Salem, VA

Comments about Pentax Optio A10 Digital Camera:

This is supposed to be Pentax's small digital camera for themore high end user. Unfortunately, Pentax did not allowfor much control in this camera as there are no aperture orshutter priority modes and no fully manual mode. This is apoint and shoot only camera that takes fine snapshots, butfor anything else (like your daughter's gymnastics class, your kids doing anything but posing for stills), lookelsewhere. Have had only one other problem with the camera -- dropspixels regularly. That is probably a fault with this unit Ihave here and not a model defect.Small size is very nice - fits into shirt pocket very well.

Problems Encountered: See above ANDSlow shutter speed (will miss most action shots).Slow auto focus with impossibly slow manual focus (next tounusable).

Pentax Camera is Great

By Richard

from Middletown, Delaware

Comments about Pentax Optio A10 Digital Camera:

I purchased this as a second, pocket camera to supplement my Canon Rebel digital for those time I don't feel like taking a large camera, locally and on vacation. This camera takes great pictures, is fast, and produces excellent colors. I can't say enough about Pentax's support. 5 Days after I purchased this camera, the view screen broke. I was not aware of anything I did to cause this, but on the other hand I could not prove that I was responsible for breaking it either. I sent the camera off to Pentax, telling them what happened, asking for a warranty repair, or a cost estimate to fix the camera. To my delight, Pentax fixed the camera at no charge to me.I now have two of these units, one personal, and a second I purchased for work. I take probably 20-30 pictures a day at work, this is a great camera with great results!

Problems Encountered: See above.
