Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras.
The Pentax smc P-DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm ED (IF) lens was designed exclusively for use with digital SLRs, and combines full-frame fisheye (180° diagonal angle of view at a focal length of 10mm) to super wide-angle performance in a single unit.
This lens makes it possible to capture images with an expanded perspective including creative deformation of subjects and sharp pan focus that extends throughout the entire frame.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
This lens easily surpassed my expectations. Images are very clear with some chromatic abberation toward the edges; but with any ultra-wide angle/fisheye lens, there is going to be that chromatic abberation. The lens feels very solid and zooms and focuses very smoothly. I would definitely by this lens over any other fisheye lens, even if this one costs twice as much.
Also, this lens takes superb macro shots.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
I have been looking at this lens for a while and it was definitely the right step to buy it. I have only had the chance to play with it for a short period of time but it was everything I was hoping for. Outdoors it can provide a vast panoramic view and in close country it allows you to feel like you stepped right into your pictures. For portraits, it gives you clear sharp image and can provide various amounts of distortion around the edges, framing your subject with great effect. Highly recommended and at a great price.

Amazing piece of glass...
I had no idea how much fun a lens like this was. - I purchased during my NYC trip from Aus and produced some amazing city photos.
The usual great Pentax quality pushed me to purchase this one over the Sigma. But all in all it just produced a better picture.
Ultrawide is also a bonus.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
Have used this for about a month and have no complaints. Very light, has a good feel, strong fish-eye at 10mm but mild at 17mm. Have gotten some great wide angle pictures never achievable before with my other lenses. Macro feature works well letting you get very close to the object if needed and not having to zoom way in. Haven't noticed the fringing mentioned in the reviews yet. Very pleased with this lens. Using on my Pentax K7.

This is a great lens for getting funky party shots and neat landscape photos. Being a fish-eye, images show a lot of distortion, but that's the point.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
A great addition to any pentax format lens collection. Very high quality shots with great colours and sharpness. Does work as a wide angle for landscape shots at a distance but a little distortion is found on closer objects, even at 17mm. Full fish eye (10mm) shots are really cool, will have lots of fun with this lens...

Used the lens recently on a shoot in Yellostone National Park under varied atmospheric conditions. Panoramas were clear and required minimal post production editing

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens because I take a lot of interior pictures for architectural purposes, and frankly I really like fish-eye photography. I've used and old Curvatura adapter for years (which was fun) on the end of my lens but once I saw the DA 10-17mm, I was hooked. It really makes photography fun, I use it with my K20D, very happy I bought this lens.

This lens is exactly what I was looking for.
I shoot a lot of my son's ice hockey team. I shoot w/a 200mm f2.8 and a 70mm f2.8.
This lens allows me to take more creative shots. I've even taken some video with it with my K-7 and am very happy with the results. Looking forward to using it in NYC.
Interesting that you need to be very close to the subject otherwise you lose them.
The photos I have taken are very sharp.
I cannot think of a thing I don't love about this lens.

I can not believe the pictures I can capture with this lens. I live in and area where I can expand my photos with high quality lens by Pentax. I have been shooting with a Pentax for over 40 years both in Asia and the US, I am very proud what I have purchase and I thank my son for leading me to B&H. [...]

A great lens for that special effect. Great for getting in close to a field of wildflowers and creating some very artistic images. It is also great for shooting architecture-i.e.-small rooms or tight places where you want to get everything in the frame.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
I never really considered buying a fisheye lens. It was pretty much an impulse buy. It turns out it may have been one of my best lens investments. The images are very crisp and clear with vibrant color. Its not an everyday lens but the rederings are beautiful and make me want to use it regularly. So much so that it has earned a permanent place in the bag.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED Autofocus Lens:
I have this lens for about year and half.
This is very fun lens, everybody loves being shot with this one and glad Pentax (and Tokina) sells such unique lens. Also it has good construction.
While it is fun lens, it does not have very good resolution, so not fit if you want to take crisp nature photo, also chromatic aberration is very apparent.
So if you are looking for DSL-only (not capable with ordinary point & shoot) snap shots experience, i would highly recommend it. This lens is not really fit for scenery nor any photo that requires high resolution.
