Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with larger image sensor than APS-C size
The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro lens is a large-aperture lens with a maximum f/stop of f/2.8 in wide angle setting. The super wide-angle capability of this zoom lens (equivalent range of approx. 27-112mm when used with a Canon digital SLR camera) makes it ideal as an everyday large-aperture lens. In addition, the maximum magnification of 1:2.3 also enables close-up photography.
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size, e.g. 1D series or Kodak Pro SLR/c.

I had this lens for over two years, and meanwhile I got to make an informed opinion about it.
I've seen the other posts and I don't know what to make of them; regarding image quality, it's the best "normal zoom" lens. Extremely sharp even for macro photography, and even when using 25mm macro rings.
Sharpness: excelent, my copy is as sharp as Canon's 17-55IS and vastly superior to the Canon's 17-85IS; wide-open is amazing, and if it was made by Canon it'd get an L designation.
Chromatic aberation: extremely low, under one pixel even in corners.
Flare: very resistant, and the included lens shade makes short work of it.
Contrast, color: perfect. I used it for three weddings (coupled with a Canon 30D) and half of the time was used wide-open, for "available darkness" photography; the shadows held up with lots of detail, and colors were accurate indoor and outdoor.
A friend of mine aquired a good copy after turning down another two, but I got mine as the last one from the shelf (so I couldn't afford the luxury of hand-picking between copies); nevertheless, I ended up with a perfect one.
Regarding the batch variance, I don't know what to think; people seem to have various opinion, but a certain regard could not change: bokeh. Contrary to some other views, my Sigma produces butter-smooth background both wide-open and when stopped down to f/6.3-f/11; this is part of the design, and a requirement for portrait and macro.
The only gripe that I have is that the focus is loud; on the other hand, focusing is done quickly in all but the darkest environments.
Overall, I recommend it wholeheartedly; it's head and shoulders above any kit lens (18-70 Nikkor, 18-55IS), and it has a very useful focal range while being satisfactory luminous.
P.S.: the price was a bit high, but that's because in Europe everybody pays a price premium.

Great value if you arent shooting in a hurry. After using it for a few weddings, there has been too many times it hasnt focused fast enough, nor actually locked on to what it claimed to have focused on. I have quite a few photos that are just a hair out of focus. Thats not to say its not possible to get a good focus though. When it locks on properly, its razor sharp. Other than that, my only complaint is the zoom creep.
An otherwise great lens. Great zoom range, maximum aperture, and strong build.

This lense is a little soft at f2.8. I do mostly Landscapes at f5.6 + so this effects me very little. Overall an excellent lense. A dandy macro lense, will focus at the front element at 70mm.

Really solidly built lens with excellent image quality. The zoom isn't as smooth as I had hoped, but that's definitely something I can deal with. The autofocus is a bit slow, but it's always very accurate. Great IQ at all focal lengths. I definitely recommend this lens as an alternative to its much more expensive Canon counterpart.

It takes breathtaking pictures with very crisp quality. The colors are vibrant - however, if it is too sunny I would recommend the 72mm Polarizer Filter! Otherwise I adore this lens!

I've always purchased Canon lens, but needed a 2.8 lens, Canon price was a lot higher than Sigma. Friends and other Photographer uses Sigma and recommended it. I love the lens, it has a lock in position to keep the lens from moving during transport. The photograps are beautiful. I've been doing landscape, portraits, animals, flowers and sunsets. The cons is it is heavy, however all of the good out ways this one bad.

I am a DSLR Film maker and was looking for a walk around lens to use with my 7D that had decent range, smooth focus, a great picture and found that with this lens. I was amazed at how smooth the zoom and focus were. The picture is incredible, comparable to the canon L series. I especially like how it does in low light. Ideally in real low light I'm use a quicker fixed length lens, but this performs well. I highly recommend this to any DSLR Film maker.

I purchased this product to round out my lens current lens collection and it has definitely delivered. It is my first wide angle lens and it is amazing how much it can capture in a single shot. It has clear, fast focus and delivers crisp photos. I especially like the built in macro feature. It's like having two lenses in one.

I gave this lens five stars because this is a perfect lens for my needs.
I bought this lens two times.
In the first time, I was too new in photograph to know what a good lens realy is, based on the way you work.
I sold it to buy a original canon lens searching for sharpness. My first mistake. I just not improve sharpness, but I lost flexibility, which was the second main reason that I need I lens like this one (first is sharpness).
So, this lens is sharp. Autofocus is fast even without a USM like ring. It looks and feels like a quality product.
The bottom line for me is, in this zoom range, if you need extreme sharpness, from corner to corner, and a very large aperture, so you need a prime lens (or some ultra-expensive zoom lens).
With this lens you can have flexibility and very good quality. Also, you may decide to buy two others primes (35mm / 50mm eq.) for the ocasions when you need light and cutting edge sharpness.

Well I am a photographer that has just started my business and focusing on booking weddings. I bought this lens because it is f/2.8 which is great for low light i.e a chaple. I just used the lens for the first time during a wedding shoot and it worked great for the price i bad. The zoom twist is a little stiff and not as smooth as its canon counter part. One other thing is that auto focus it relatively slow. I am used the canon lens with the Ultra Sonic motors. So this sigma's slower focus was the only thing that worried me. But low and behold it turned out to work just fine during the entire 12 hr day of shooting.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras:
I was REALLY excited after reading all of the positive reviews for this lens. This is my first experience with a non-Canon lens for my T2i. I have the kit EF-S 18-55, EF-S 55-200 and the 50mm F/1.8. I used the lens a couple of times for about a week. The lens is very sharp when its in focus. I say this because my copy had serious back focus issues. It was really frustrating. Sadly I have to send it back.

Im shooting with a Canon 7d. I've been looking for a wide angle lens with a big aperture. For the price your paying you will love this lens. I wished it was fixed at 2.8 but even with the smaller aperture at zoomed points give you great bokeh. Very nice indoors with little light. I like to shoot without a flash as much as possible and this lens lets me do just that. It also feels like a sturdy, quality lens, not "plastic-y".

Firstly, I have only had this lens for two weeks. I have had some opportunities to take it for a couple test runs however.
The quality of the lens seems very nice. Very sturdy and solid. The down side to that of course is the weight of the lens. Quite a bit heavier that people will be used to if you upgrading from the canon kit lens. Doesnt really bother me, but depending on the person it may be something to think about.
Im failry impressed with the quality of the pictures the lens takes. Very sharp, and no back or front focusing problems on mine. The color seems pretty good, but I usually shoot in RAW and play with the photos on photoshop so Im never crazy about the color straight out of the camera.
Takes great macro style shots.
I love the focal range. 17-70 seems to be just right.
Definitely an upgrade from the kit lens. Wish you could shoot at 2.8 at all focal lengths. Other than that and it being rather heavy, its a great lens.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras:
I bought the lens 3 years ago to replace an other Sigma (18-125) as a walk around glass. It is a superior lens in every way. It is quite sharp for a lens in this price range. Even it it is not really meant macro, it will do more than an OK job. The lens has only one really weak spot - 17mm at wide-open aperture where the extreme border performance is soft and there is vignetting but certainly no worse than the alternatives. If the lens was 2.8 constant, I would glue it to my camera.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras:
This lens is part of my 2 lens kit that I take with me to shoot my daughters' gymnastics meets. Flash is not allowed and I need fast lenses for the shoots. I have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM II and this lens and it covers all the focal lengths I need at a pricetag that non-pros can live with. The lens does not have a hypersonic focus motor but focus travel is so short it does not need it and focus is very fast and accurate. The image quality is very good and when you factor in the price, it is excellent! The distortions are less than other lenses in this class/price range. Great resolution, contrast and general lens performance.
Plus, a nice surprise for this lens is its macro capabilities. I can get within a couple inches of the subject!
The only negatives I can mention is the bokeh, the lens extends when zooming and it is not sealled. The Bokeh is not as buttery smooth as other very high dollar lenses. It is average at best. The lens does extend quite far when you zoom in. And finally, I wish it were environment seal but I don't expect that on a lens in this class. But really I am just picking nits.
Overall though, highly recommended. Especially if you are on a budget.

I would consider myself in the hobbiest category of photography, but definitely look for good quality gear at affordable pricing. I shoot with a basic DSLR (Canon XTi) and was looking for an upgrade from my kit lens. I really like wide angle photography and thought that the 17mm end would be nice. Also the wide aperture was a must for me.
I received the lens quickly after ordering, and have shot two days in Madrid with good results. I didn't have my tripod with me on the trip, but was able to take some good night shots just hand-held, and found that this lens focuses fairly consistently, quickly, in low light.
As others have said, this lens will focus EXTREMELY close to a subject, and so the macro aspect of the SIGMA 17-70 is a lot of fun too.
I would recommend this lens to a friend, and have found it to be of good build quality, sharpness, and quick focusing.
