Impact Sandbags come in a variety of shapes and weights. They are used for securing the bases of light stands and set walls. This Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 18 lb (Black Cordura) has two wings, to allow draping over light stand legs. Each side of the bag has a hand strap for easy handling and hanging on hooks.
This is an empty sandbag, with a double zippered closure. Fill it with sand or small rocks upon arrival at location, and empty it at the end of the shoot -- no heavy shlepping or high shipping expenses.

This empty sandbag version is the more econimical way to order it, obvious reason. This is a dual zippered unit with zippers running in opposing direction, to reduce chances or sand leaks. It's made with rather thick and durable material capable of dealing with day in and day out workload. My first test with these ran fabulously. I ordered 4 bags, 2 for the dual light stands and 2 for the heavy duty backdrop stands. The bags are sized just right for my use, not too big and heavy to make my shuttling of these bags a backbreaker. It's a capable product.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 18 lb (Black Cordura):
I have a lot of weight lifting plates laying around, so used 4 each 5 pound plates to turn an 18 pound empty saddlebag into a 20 pound sandbag; sand is way too messy and light; lead shot is best; but the cheapest way to load an empty saddlebag is to put unused weight lifting plates into service, standard 1" or olympic plates will both work with these empty sandbags, 2 1/2 pound plates work in the 5 lb bag, 5 pound plates work in the 18 and 27 pound bags, and 10 pound plates work in the 37 pound saddlebags. Steel is much more dense that sand and less messy.

I use two of these saddle sandbags to secure a light stand with a 45 inch umbrella outside and have not had it tip over.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 18 lb (Black Cordura):
It does the job. Although stated that it's a 18 lb sandbag, I went to [@] to buy a pack of 50 lb general use sand. Instead of tossing the sand straight into the sandbags, I was worried about leaking, so I tossed the sand into ziplock bags, 2 ziplock bags in each side, 4 ziplock bags in 1 whole sandbag, it weighted around 14 lbs together. I guess if I didn't use ziplock bags, it would have filled up more room to make it 18 lbs. The sandbags are double sealed by zippers which gives it extra leaking protection, although I felt like using more ziplock bags would help, because I don't want sand leaking all over inside my car.The one complaint that I have is that the zippers seem really hard to zip up when it's at the edge because of how tight the room was. One other sandbag I purchased, the zipper had wasn't properly aligned, but I fixed it so it's no problem.

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 18 lb (Black Cordura):
I use this when I need to set up a backdrop outside or when I need to stablize my light stand. I do 95% of my photo shoots outside and when a backdrop is required, this sandbag keeps the backdrop stand in place without having to worry that it will tumble over for any reason. It works especially well with my off camera flash and umbrella. It doesn't topple with a slight breeze! It's been very useful so far. I did buy my own sand and put it into Ziplock baggies inside the double zippered pockets. Keeps them clean!

Comments about Impact Empty Saddle Sandbag - 18 lb (Black Cordura):
I fill the bags with pea gravel. It gives the necessary weight without the mess. If you do any location work, then you know that things happen; like the wind, people not watching where they are going (assistants), or shooting on unlevel ground.
The bags are inexpensive compared to gear, and it's just wise to have several bags handy; i,e, at least one for each stand.

It seems to be made well. The zippers are good quality. Only downfall is the strap. I wish it had a buckle of some kind like other brands I have. This makes it hard to slip over the end of a boom in some cases.

Great sandbags. Smart double-zip design, but I keep the sand in ziplock bags anyway, just for the added protection. Get sand all over your car or equipment once, and you learn to do that.

[...] A 60 pound bag of tube sand costs $4, is perfect for filling 4 of these, and pays for itself immediately over the filled bags which cost about $3 more each. I plan to buy more in the future
