i write and record rock/electronic music and use the 600 as the main recorder. after having difficult experiences with analog machines, the br-600 is a breath of fresh air. the sound quality is great, it allows you to mix and master on the spot.
it's very easy to use. you'll have to spend some time reading the manual, but once you get the feel for how it operates, it's fairly intuitive.
if you're wondering (and i know you are), you CAN record more than 8 tracks. each of the 8 tracks has 8 "virtual" tracks, for a total of 64. but since this is a digital machine, you wont recognize the difference between a virtual track and any other track - they all function the same way. so, you can record on the original 8 tracks, bounce them, then record additional tracks and bounce them AND the previously bounced tracks onto the same track, multiplying the 600's capability.
i was skeptical of the effects that are touted on this machine, but they're really good! i've gotten to where i run my guitar through the 600 rather than my pedal setup by default.
the downsides to it are that it has a small, analog screen that can be difficult to read. the br-600 is easy to use if you use it correctly, but leaves room for you to make errors by not having the right settings in place. also, it saves data in a weird file format that must be converted to .wav or AIFF before exporting. i'd prefer to be able to plug the card right into my computer and drag and drop. the cards themselves are getting hard to find. requires a 1Gig or smaller card at 45X or so. it can run on batteries, but you have to buy the power adapter separately if you prefer to plug in.
overall, i'm more than pleased with this machine and it was well worth the money i paid for it. i had high expectations and even they were exceeded. definitely recommend!

This is one of the best compact systems for the money. Feature packed with 300 preset drum tracks and on board effects. 64 total tracks in all! Note: This recorder only works with 32 bit computers or Win. ME and 2000. This a go anywhere system. As long as you can mix it down on the right computer don't pass it up!

I only rated 4 stars, only because I'm a novice and not sure what all my capabilities are... [...] I am please with what I can do at this point....

Comments about Boss BR-600 8-Track Digital Studio Recorder:
I needed a mobile 8 track to capture ideas on the fly. Prior to this, I had been working with a stand alone hard disk recorder in my studio. That studio has now been condensed to a carry on suitcase and I missed not being able to just push record and go. Plus, recording to a laptop wasn't working either. The Boss-600 has been able to replace my old need of a stand alone and still fits in the carry on. I can upload to a laptop later for further editing.
The 600 is the older model, but reviewers were saying it still had better capabilities than the 2010 model, so I trusted my gut. An older model means less money out of my pocket, as well.
The 1gig compact flash memory cards were a concern of mine, but I tried a cheap generic card that works great. Get a generic card before you spend lots of money on a name brand.
Manual is easy to read, but I'm used to struggling through bad manuals with my past stand alone recorders. If this is your first attempt at 8 track recording, you will have challenges. But the user groups on the internet will get you through it.
Recording sounded clearer than what I was expecting. Exporting/Importing via the USB was a snap. I'm really happy with this purchase.

I bought this so I could record some not-so-rough tracks to share with my band. Very happy with the sound quality thus far. It's fairly complicated to get started but once you get a feel for it, very easy to use.

It was very easy to understand the logics of the product, so I started making the basic use very fast. Good guitar effects, good drum presets, very functional. The drum pads are not that good. The manual says the compact flash card is limited to 1GB, and what you will find is 4, 8 or more GB. I´m sattisfied, and I recomend it as a basic recorder.

Wow! was my first impression. An eight channel recorder with an abundance of features, utilities and outstanding performance.
Bulit in mikes, drum machines, reverb, chorous, rythym pacakges - the list goes on and on. Even after a week, I am still exploring this remarkable studio.

I bought this to work with new material, recording bits and pieces with bass, guitar, vocals and drum programming. Works fine, and easy to use.
I like the small size, and at the same time you feel in control of the different features - with a good layout of controls.
For my purpose: A great value piece of equipment!

I'm a ol' retired road musician. This little BR600 is totally fun and a great way to keep your chops in shape. Pick a drum pattern, lay a bass track, then practice your licks until your fingers quit working, or get serious and lay as many tracks as you want. The option of the virtual tracks gives you so many choices. Stuff we would not have believed in the studios in the late 60's. Effects are endless. I'm lovin'it!
