Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1-2 person head, or head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Comments about Photoflex 45 Inch Convertible Umbrella:
A shoot thru umbrella is a must to any photographer wanting to improve their portrait skills. Bought one and will be buying a second one very soon. High quality at a reasonable price is what I like about this Photoflex umbrella. The added convenience of using as a bounce umbrella with the black backing or backing removed to use as a "shoot through" is extremely desireable. Great product.

I bought two and like these umbrella's. I like the fiber ribs instead of them being metal. Used several times and seem to be very well made. Cover is very easy to remove and reattach. Nice light distribution shooting through or bounce. Overall happy with purchase, I would buy these again.

Comments about Photoflex 45 Inch Convertible Umbrella:
I recently bought this umbrella as my 1st modifier for my strobist kit. My friend has a 43" Lastolite convertible umbrella that I've used a few times. I like the idea of these fiberglass ribs better than his steel wire ones that are bent and one is broken. One thing that I like better about his is that the inside of the black cover is reflective silver and this one is not. His can have the white taken completely off and used strictly as a silver bounce umbrella. This Photoflex model has the white permanently attached to the frame and is either shoot through or bounce with the black cover on. Also the little black cap that goes on the tip could easily be lost... I don't love that.
But overall it seems to be built out of good materials and will definitely be used a lot.

Comments about Photoflex 45 Inch Convertible Umbrella:
This umbrella is well made and easy to use. The black backing slips off and on easily. I like the plastic ribs on the umbrella; they are likely to flex rather than bent into a kink as metal ribs might do. The white fabric is a bit more "silvery" than I had imagined (it's advertised as "white") but colors and speculars seem OK. Handles 1-2 person head shot well. Shoot-through with the backing off seems pretty good -- not a soft box but pretty good, nonetheless.

Comments about Photoflex 45 Inch Convertible Umbrella:
I own several Photoflex products, and I've never been disappointed. I bought this over other brands because of the fiberglass ribs--I'm expecting them to last longer. I primarily shoot through them, but I like having the black backing if I want it. The covers come off easy. Remove half of the cover to create a sort of strip box. My only complaint is that there is no stitching around the center hole in the cover. I'm hoping the edges of the hole do not fray--only time will tell.

It's sort of expensive for an umbrella, but the quality is great. I bought this to accompany their larger 63 inch umbrella (which is HUGE)
I'd get this one. Having the cover is a nice feature.
