Comments about Akai EWI4000s - Electronic Wind Instrument:
This truly is state-of-the-art for wind controllers; however, the octave key rollers take a lot of time to get used to, and the 100 cheesy synth sounds that come pre-loaded on it are of little use except to test the playability of the instrument. The first thing you'll need to do is get a real sound bank; check the web if you don't already know where to find one. The keys are touch-sensitive, so they have no moving parts; this requires some getting used to, but not much. You'll have to learn a new way to use vibrato, but it's not that hard really. It has a transposition feature that allows you to play in the key of any instrument out there. It uses AA batteries, or you can plug-in the optional AC power. The EWI 4000s is not a power hog, so I just keep rechargeable batteries on hand.

Comments about Akai EWI4000s - Electronic Wind Instrument:
I was seeking a full-featured portable instrument that I could use while traveling by aircraft for practicing in hotels. With a nice set of headphones and rechargeable batteries, this fits the bill perfectly. Unlike the USB model, this works without needing to haul around a laptop, which is a major benefit to traveling light.
It would be nice if there were a good case for it, but that's in no way a criticism of the instrument itself.

Comments about Akai EWI4000s - Electronic Wind Instrument:
Great solid build instrument. The octave key is a little tricky to get used to it, it take a couple of hours (as a sax player). The presets sounds arent so good, so it's a must the midi-usb interface (not included) to get it customize with your computer or use your ewi as a midi controller, i use reason, logic pro, garage band and works great, you can configure what parameter you what to control with the breath (such as volume, velocity, etc) so you can configure to have a great expressiveness.
It's a little expensive, so it would be nice if it include a case, or even sell one separately, i still use the original package to transport it!!, the accesories are cheap, the neck strap, even the cleaning cloth is a joke.
I really recommend it is so fun to play with it, and is great to have an quiet alternative to practice (with headphones) in the night (with the sax it simply not possible)

It is a expensive instrument, so more accessory should be available to make it more valuable.
Ex. Hard case, Wireless connection to AMP or MIDI, etc.
