We go camping twice a year at sites that have no electricity for 9 days in a row. When you missed a perfect shot because the battery ran out of power, you find a solution. An extra battery is the answer. I let my battery run completely down before I recharge because of the extra battery. This helps the life of the battery.
We once bought an extra battery that wasn't the name brand. It wouldn't charge well and wouldn't hold a charge. Now, we only buy the same brand for our electronics. It is worth the extra in price.

AS EXPECTED FROM GENEUINE CANON PRODUCT. You will need it if plans on shooting all day, because the original battery will only last you half a day max, or lesser if you maily shooting video. (I use this with Canon S100)

Bought this as a spare battery for my Canon PowerShot S100. Researched buying the OEM battery vs. 3rd party batteries, and ultimately decided to go OEM as the battery life is reputedly longer. (No reason to skimp on a few dollars when you are pairing it with a premium compact camera!)

Using this in a Canon s100. Works fine, but battery drains a whol lot faster when shooting HD video. Alarmingly fast. That may be a design flaw of the s100, but it's clear Canon has not ironed this out yet...

Considering all internet options regarding price of this battery, I felt somewhat confident buying this more expensive NB-5L from B&H. I called and they assured me it was an authentic Canon battery. Upon receipt, and after reading canon's detailed discription of the hologram attached to the battery package, I am totally confident I have the real product. To me, saving ten or fifteen dollars on a knockoff battery is penny wise and pound foolish.

I've tried third party batteries and have never been satisfied with the run time. If you use the GPS feature on this camera it really reduces the battery life. That said, a second battery is a must. You can almost buy two of the third party batteries for the price of one Canon, but stick with the Canon and save yourself the headache.

I bought an additional battery for my Power Shot for a trip I was taking to China. I attended an Ice Festival in temperatures around -25 degrees. The battery in the camera wore out after a time but having kept the extra battery in my pocket, when the time came to exchange batteries, the additional battery was ready to go.
