I have owned several scanners over the years, including flatbeds and film scanners. I bought the Epson V700 to scan several boxes of family pictures.
I had used a Scanwit 2720S to scan several in recent years. When it became obsolete I went cheap and purchased an ION Slide To PC unit. Big mistake. Not to diss it, but the quality was not there, and it was difficult to use their film carrier never really knowing if a frame was aligned until after the scan.
When the V700 arrived I scanned a few for comparison and there was none. I ended up rescanning all of them over again with high settings and Digital Ice option. It was well worth the time and effort. They don't even look like the same images the quality is so much better.
The V700 is fast compared to anything I have used and the bulk scanning feature is awsome. If you are new to scanning of this type, it may not seem fast. A high res scan (singel frame) on the BenQ Scanwit could take 10-15 minutes and the results would not come close. The Ion was fast but the scans worthless. I have owned HP, Cannon, UMAX and other flatbeds, all were slower and required a lot of work in Photoshop when done. It takes 15 minutes to do 12 slides at very high settings with Digital Ice on the V700. I am sure it would be a lot faster at lower settings.
I was concerned about compatability with Windows 7, but Epson has a Win7 download that includes the driver, Digital Ice, and scan wizard. Most of the other bundled software has not been updated on the included CDs, although I have not approached the companies yet to inquire about upgrade which may be available. The Epson software and Photoshop have work fine for me.
I am in my mid 50's and started taking pictures in my late teens. I have boxes of negatives and positives, as well as old photos. Some of the family photos go back to the late 1800's. The V700 has handled everything I have thrown at it without the need to rescan a single image, something that was relatively regular with my other scanners.
The V700 has been around a while, but is not dated technology. It has very high ratings and reviews that are well deserved. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to use it, and get very high quality scans. For these one of a kind family pictures I am happy with my purchase. I am sure there are high end scanners that would go one better, but as an ameteur with a boatload of both film and digital images over a 35 year span, this thing is a godsend.
No downside so far. I am at somewhere around 300 images in the last two weeks.

Bought Epson V700 some 10 days ago, specifically and exclusively for MF negatives. From first 6/9cm roll- Fuji Pro 400, with "SilverFast 8"( it turned out to be "MagentaSuper Slow" and we r talking new intel core i5 iMac here) got just 2-3 color correct ( and very really gorgeous) images, the rest with strong magenta/violet color cast ; all whites ,blues - violet colored, no matter what setting. Manufacture/type of film presets have Nothing!! to do with reality. Tried second roll - 6/7cm Kodak Porta 400 -magenta all over again. Epson software gives perfect histogram fit, 15 times faster than "MagentaSlow", no color cast , BUT!! no deep colors at all !! everything looks flat like nice colored blackandwhite image "retro cinema" style. Before I got V700 scanner never I could imagine that there are hundreds of ways to ruin colour in the same photo. Returned the product to the store. Thanks to B&H merciful policy. But there is nothing else to get in this class... and i need scanner: at least to check out the negatives/slides. Bought second V700 Epson scanner. To my great surprise it is at least possible to keep it. Coloration is terrible but not just magenta/violet ,now we get some to choose from. Somehow U can manage it. I`l keep it.
Now, that was personal and emotional and true experience. So is it empty or full ?? OK, here we go:
1.It doesn`t really matter how good or bad the scanner is because in this class there is no alternative. Unfortunately it is "best" , so far, in this class. So U got to get it.
2. Scanner hardware : resolution, detailes of scans are astonishingly good. Once again- resolution and details in images really great.
3. Now colour. There are two softwares to it: "Epson Scan' and "SilverFast 8" Very hard to tell which is worse.
3.SilverFast 8- IMHO, much better because ( unlike Epson Scan) it can reproduce rich deep colours sometimes even without terrible crazy coloration mostly magenta, dead blue and green. SF8 buggy, super slow, sometimes u need to "Force quit" app. to restart it. Luckily, it is also super inconsistent ; u can have the hope to get better results with the same setting next time fiddling around. Don`t take seriously manufacture/ type/iso film presets. Just try and error all of them to get acceptable let alone desirable results. To get rid of crazy blue tint with Kodak Porta 400 ,i had to use Agfa whatever preset. It is OK to use 100 or whatever iso preset with let say your 400iso film. ISRD defect removal works great BUT !!...introduces rather noticeable magenta colorcast. Don`t use it ,unless u want colouration of image. Software fails big time- but at least it can give u deep rich colours. Not so with "Epson Scan"
4."Epson Scan"- No deep rich colours at all !! Scans look like very nice, good colored blackandwhite image, "retro cinema" style. Yes, looks very good to those who like, I don`t. And images don`t look by any stretch of imagination, as real normal colour images." Epson Scan" very consistent ,15 times faster than "SF8" , fits histogram perfectly. No blowouts/lost highlights. When U can`t get rid of crazy stupid colorcasts in SF8- "Epson Scan" saves the day.
But unfortunately: not a single image from Epson Scan looks like real colour image. Everyting looks as B/W image with very good but colour filter applied.
5.I have read about 140 raving reviews on this site, and guess what ? I don`t care one bit. Not sorry either. The King IS Naked.
6. Conclusion: Great hardware- resolution, details.
Colour Management Software - miserable, very poor. Giddy Up for Photoshop. Good Luck !

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:
I've had my 3170 for three years and were it not for my father, a pro-portrait photographer leaving an assortment of negative sizes from the 40's an 50's I would still be moving along with my 3170. The only reason I bought the V700 was to accommadate the larger negatives.
I have a Dell PC so there was no conflict with the software when I loaded and there was very little difference that would give you a problem between one model and the next. Very smooth transition, almost no learning curve if you've owned an Epson in the last few years.
What did I gain? For 35mm negatives the V700 35mm frame holds double the negatives of the 3170. For 35mm slides the V700 frame holds a dozen, the 3170 had no slide frame. In short, the V700 can handle up to an 8x10 negative. My 3170 is not obsolete because transparency capacity aside, it is the equal of the V700.
Basically it is load the program, turn it on, and you're ready to go.

I purchased this product to copy my photos, 35 MM negetives, slides and 4 x 5 negetives ... so far it has done an excellant job of entering them onto my computer...I am still learning all that this unit can do, each day is a new experience that allows me to copy my photographic images.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:
Scanner is BIG so be prepared. I bought the scanner specifically for scanning thousands of ancient 35 mm slides. I have only scanned in a few hundred so far, and it sure is easier than doing it one at a time using my old HP S20 photo scanner. The only problem I've noticed is that some of the scans do not include 100% of the slide image. I'm still trying to figure out if I can adjust the scan area so that the images are not cropped. That's the only reason I gave the unit only 4 stars. For info, I'm using the Epson scanning software. The time to scan 12 slides at 1200 dpi using color correction and digital ice is about 30 minutes. Time is doubled if using 2400 dpi. I can't imagine how long it would take if you use the maximum 12800 dpi.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:
I bought a Flextight scanner in 1998 for 18,000 dollars. I used it to scan transparencies and negatives up to 4 x 5 inches in size from which I could make hight quality portfolio prints. I also had an Agfa Duoscan which I used for documents and images that were scanned for record keeping - it certainly wasn't good enough for reproduction.
I read about a photo archivist who uses the V700 to scan negatives for high end art book reproduction. I bought one hoping to scan a backlog of color negatives for which I no longer have contact sheets - I need to be able to do that quickly - as well as making high resolution scans of the selections I want to keep. It was very easy to scan transparencies with the Flextight and also black and white negatives, but color negatives were always difficult. I wondered how well the V700 would do.
I have already scanned several rolls of 220 color negative film. The auto setting in the software produces a good color balance at the press of a button and batch scanning each frame at 600 dpi produces a file that is big enough from which to evaluate the image and which doesn't take very long to scan.
I haven't yet used the scanner to make prints but it seems promising. I have made one very high resolution scan made from an old glass negative, which looks great.
If the V700 had a bigger bed I could scan and archive prints - and I would certainly have been prepared to pay a lot more to be able to do that. But this scaner is great value for money.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:
For over15 years I shot exclusively with 35mm and some medium format film, and this meant a huge scanning project in order to digitize my catalog. In my research, I went back and forth between the Plustek and Epson scanners (used to own a Nikon Supercoolscan 8000). I finally opted for the batch scan capability of the Epson and am very happy with the results. It's much easier to get a high quality scan with this than it was with the Nikon, and it's also much faster to scan 12 35mm slides at the same time. After reading multiple reviews I opted to use my previously installed Photoshop CS3 instead of the software included with the Perfection V700. Not saying it's better, but it's what I'm comfortable with.
The V700 is a high quality scanner from everything I've witnessed so far. I do agree with some other reviews that the 35mm slide bracket clips seem a little brittle, but with gentle treatment they'll probably still last quite a while. I'd recommend purchasing a second bracket now just to be on the safe side. Overall, I'm very happy with the results and feel that I made the right choice.

I like this scanner because it is easy to use, scans multiple frames at one time, and gives me a fairly good image, especially since I'm scanning film which is more than 15 years old . The digital Ice is not as good as the Nikon Cool scan, but clean up is not too difficult.

The Epson V700 scanner is proving to do a fabulous job batch scanning slides. I scan 12 slides at a time at 6400 dpi with Digital Ice turned on. Each slide takes around two minutes to scan and the colors are dead on with the slides. My scanner is connected via USB and processed on an Toshiba i7 laptop. The scans are very sharp and enlarge quite well.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:
So far I have successfully scanned reflective flat copy photos and documents and 35mm positive transparencies. The over all speed and quality is significantly better than my older Epson 4800 unit. My only complaint is that one must really search for basic instructions. I wish they had a guide that said...if you want to scan 35mm slides start by....this would then walk you through the physical layout of the equipment and optional settings. With this type of instruction you would at least have a starting point upon which to experiment.I will turn to U-Tube to find instruction that typically came with an equipment purchase. Learning to use this unit to full advantage will take some time. I am running Snow Leopard on a 27 inch iMac and the interface seems quite quite intuitive. I understand that additional drivers may be needed with Apple new Lion OS.

The scanner is great but the utility software that comes with it does not work with MAC Lion. Getting Epson support to resolve these issues has not gone well. They tend to give you canned answers that do not address the problem and if you ask about multiple problems they tend to answer only the first problem. Getting phone support didn't resolve the problem. I expect I will need to send a letter to the Epson President responsible for the USA.

This is my first scanner for film and negatives, so I am a bit of a novice. The setup for Windows 7 went smoothly as I downloaded the latest drivers and software from the internet. I'm just using this scanner to scan all of my family's slides and negatives. Using Silverfast SE does a decent job of scanning negatives. I've only printed to 4x6 so far, but it should be able to print larger no problem. I choose this scanner over the V600 because of the better specs and the fact that this one can scan more frames at once which makes it easier to batch scan. I just have to set it up and let it run unattended.
B&H had the lowest price I could find on this scanner with free shipping and I got it one day after I ordered it. Great service.

I personally scanned 325 hours of slides 13,164 slides and 16 photo album containing 2345 pictures. This scanner did an amazing job. 12 slides at a time. takes 11 or 12 min per slide but firewire instead of usb cuts it by 1.5 min. Used scanning software from epson to color enhance all slides. I highly recommend this for major jobs. I like putting a handful of pictures on the scanner and it separating it into different jpg files. Need small light table and magnifier. used eyeglass cleaning clothes and scrubbed the front and back of the slide. started with slides from 1950 and ended with slides from 2001. If slide is covered in little specs that is mold and depending on age a chemical might take it off if it isn't eaten into the ink. Had about 200 like that had to leave out.
This is a great product. scanned in slides at 300 dpi for conserving space on drive. 8 gig will hold 15,509 pictures even if if is a little slow beats 85 cents a slide at the photo lab

Bought one of these scanners today, from a different store but think people should know it's a piece of junk. Set it up according to the instructions and just spent the last 3 hours trying to get it to work, the light on the front just flashes red and says it's unable to communicate with the scanner. Contacted epson customer service, we'll see how long it takes them to get back to me.

I bought the scanner so I can scan our family-50 year old negs and slides to preserve them. (negatives, reflective art and color slides) Many of the original photos were fading, damaged or were bad exposures. Found the scanner setup fairly easy. This scanner works so much faster than my old scanner. I used the default scanner settings and retouched my scans in a photo program.
My only complaint is that the slide holders that come with the unit are flimsy. So I used holders from my older scanner. Since this is an expensive scanner I expected the holders to be top quality.

I use the Epson V700 scanner for scanning 8x10 negative film. I was a little bummed when I received the scanner that was "touted" as being able to scan negatives and transparencies up to 8 1/2x11, because the film holders that came with the scanner only went up to 4x5. It seems to scan pretty well - its just a hassle having to make a film holder and having to rig it every time I scan.
