Both the Silverfast and the Epson software are easy to understand and to navigate through. Can easily scan film negatives or transparencies (slides) up to 8x10 inches. All of the smaller film formats can be batched scanned for speed and convenience. Photo prints or any printed materials up to letter size can also be scanned. Upper optical Resolution is well beyond most or all other scanners in this price range. My favorite non-photo item to scan is fall leaves.
I ordered and work with 3 of these workhorses at my professional photography office where we scan prints and film for clients all day long.
I'm so happy with them at work I bought one for home for my non-technical wife and myself to use on our personal photographs and artwork.

The scanner its self is OK. The software that runs it terrible. You are forced to use presets that totally ruin the scan--you can't get a raw scan. It is boarderline useless. I am SO dissapointed in theis scanner that I don't think I will purchase another Epson product again. Color calibration is a pain with missing IT8 profiles, no Silverfast Ai IT8 color card, and did I mention how terrible the presets are? My Silverfast Ai GUI is not even the same as in the instruction book. Silverfast Ai is a terrible program.
Bottomline: unless you scan larger than 6x6, get a Nikon. The Nikon film scanners are MUCH better. Unfortuanatly it was my best option for 4x5 and film on a budget.
I am now saving for a used Flextight...

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I purchased this scanner to scan the hundreds of film images I have taken over the years. I first used this scanner in a college photography class & fell in love with it.
Setup was extremely easy. It took much longer to install the various software. So far, I have only used the 35mm & 120mm film holders, both were very straightforward & easy to use. The Epson Scan software is also very straightforward (easy to select reflectivity of material, color depth, dpi, final image size, etc.). I have yet to investigate the other included software, as I am used to Photoshop CS5. I probably could have gone with the V700 over this, but wanted the extra software & film options just in case.
Only thing that isn't great is the size. It's fairly tall & long, but that was expected. Just be prepared to have the scanner take up a good chunk of your desk space.

This is one of the only scanners we've found that work in dentist's offices, for the very different and large size formats needed. Have been purchasing this scanner for several years now have had virtually NO problems! It IS large, but that's what makes it work in our applications. B&H had the best price by far, availability, and it's a pleasure working with such a high quality company.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
This scanner seems to me to be well made and has the capacity to perform extremely well. I use it to scan in 35mm and 220 film, and even on mid-resolution it pulls out detail down to the grain. Its highest res setting is just silly. It's VERY slow on the highest settings, but not unreasonable on mid-res setting (where mid-res is scanning each 35mm frame to a target size of 8x12 at 800dpi). I only wish I could order extra negative carriers for a nominal price. It would be nice to be able to load up the next batch of film while one is in the scanner. It scans documents very fast.
My complaint is with the software. It seems the frame locator (that is, the way the software decides where the frames are on the film) is my biggest peeve. I sometimes completely fails to properly locate the frame, giving you thumbnails of a bunch of half-frames. It seems to happen more often in underexposed rolls. The real annoyance is that there's no simple way to fix it. Loading and remounting does nothing, it will just parse the film wrong again. You instead need to manually select each frame from a scan of the whole film try, and the interface there is twitch-inducing.
Bottom line, great hardware with software which is which has some nasty flaws. When it works, it's terrific.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I use this scanner for 120mm panoramic slides and it works wonderful. Very high definition, easy to use. If you are looking to scan slides, negatives or prints with professional results this is the scanner you need. Produced scans of 6x17 format in high enough resolution to print sizes up to 3' x 12'. (YES THAT'S FEET)
Only draw back which is why it got four stars instead of 5. The software included was not current and hard to install. Took me three days of messing with it, registering it with everyone in the country to get it to work. Once installed it didn't offer as much options as Aperature or Lighthouse.
Hardware Excellent, Software not so much.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
The hardware is good. The software is so-so. The documentation is scant. The service is confused and speaks w/ an accent. The details...
I found Epson Scan easy to use, but it turned USM on for every slide...made you turn it off [I want to run USM last in my editing process]...and no obvious means to select all slides so you could set common choices.
I stupidly tried to scan Kodachrome slides w/ Digital ICE on...it creates ugly artifacts at some edges. This caused me to contact Epson Tech Service [both by e-mail and phone]. Nobody suggested that Kodachrome and ICE would cause this. I even sent them a blowup of the artifacts and that didn't prompt any recognition about the cause of the problem. One guy insisted it was a focus issue! Duh.
Epson DID offer to ship a new scanner w/o charging my credit card, but wanted me to see if B&H would do this first. They did, but charged my card until I returned the first scanner.
Using Digital ICE slows down the scanner because it doesn't have enough memory to store high-resolution scan data for 12 35mm slides [that's what the slide holder holds]. Consequently, it alternates between RGB and IR light sources for EACH slide...this requires a warm-up delay each time the illuminator changes. This means that it takes about 45 minutes to scan 12 35mm slides! And alternate approach would be to NOT have the ICE algorithm in the printer...instead send the RGB scans of all 12 slides to the computer and then warm up the IR illuminator and send the IR scans to the computer and have the ICE algorithm performed there...this would be faster. Perhaps the ICE license agreement doesn't allow this? Sad, as this makes it much less useful.
When using the slide holder, EpsonScan doesn't always accurately locate the slides. Sometimes it turns a vertical slide sideways...this results in the top and bottom being cut-off and big black areas on both sides. EpsonScan also normally doesn't include the edges of a slide...it crops it more tightly. Sometimes that is a good thing, but there should be an option to include the edges. SIlverFast does better with the edges, but fails to find the slide locations a LOT!
There are some "issues" w/ SilverFast on Windows 7-64. They suggested that I download Ver. 8, which I did...but it was only a 30-day trial. I hate the way both versions of SF start...they bring up a "launcher" screen and require you to click on a button. Why not just run the program?
The other piece of software that comes with the V750 is EZcolor. This is an old program. It has been replaced w/ newer programs by Gretag-MacBeth/x-rite. I have i1Match3 and the x-rite i1Display2 colorimeter. I was able to get EZcolor to create ICC profiles for the scanner [and even use it instead of i1Match3 to profile my displays], but I wasn't convinced that the new scanner profile was applied...just not sure.
In retrospect, I wish I had saved $200 and bought the V700...the extra cost is mostly for the software which is not worth $200.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I replaced my Nikon 9000 scanner, since I migrated from medium to large format. It is the best compromise of scanner that yields good scans for electronic presentation and printing. While the scan quality is where near that of a drum scanner, it is the best flatbed scanner in terms of cost and quality.
I do not like any of the bundled software because it is out of date by a few generations and incompatible with Mac OS Lion. I had to buy a third party software to make it work.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I'm still working through much of the details on this scanner. It was a bit of a time delay to get all of the software working. The Silverfast version was old for 64 bit Windows 7 and I had to get an updated version downloaded with a new license key. The tray holders and film scanning ability are definitely a welcome feature. The color callibration sample targets definitely help speed this process. I would recommend it as a good option that is one notch below a drum scan.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I purchased the V750 primarily to scan large format B&W negatives. I have a file box full of every size out there from old family photos, some over 70 years old. Most of the negatives are still in prime condition. Having these outsourced is quite costly (4x5's at [$] a piece) and already, after two weeks, I have almost recovered my cost of the scanner. Scanner speed is good and I'm able to do most jobs using just the included Epson Scan software which is simple to use. It has several modes to suit most users, included beginners. I have played around with the included Silverfast software and it is also excellent, but complicated to use. It will allow you to tweak just about any setting the scanner allows. Silverfast's capabilities are a bit of overkill for what I'm trying to do and that is archive the above mentioned negatives. My intention is to make the negatives viewable either by computer or in videos (slideshows) so I have done very little of the really high resolution scans. As would be expected, higher resolution scans take quite a bit of time. Good color scans are a piece of cake using the digital ice, but again, these take a bit more time to process. When I purchased the scanner from B&H, they had the best price on the Internet.

I shoot both digitally and with film. The scanner has allowed me the explore the possibilities of film without turning my bathroom into a darkroom. The scanner comes with a version of Silverfast that provides a good bit of pres-can adjustment. The Epson Scan professional mode (also provided) is equally as good and supposes that you will polish the scanned material in either camera raw or photoshop. The point here is that both systems will give slightly different results overcoming any deficiency in the film. The only down side is that Silverfast does not include the additional software and color targets that enable you to calibrate the scanner and make printer profiles to match your set up. All available from the Silverfast web site. But this is additional expense and will take some time to save up for, putting my printing on the back burner.

The purpose for which I bought is that I am a photographer and I can scan my old negatives and transparencies and preserve them on CDs and computer hard disks for future reference.
And above all, the quality and resolution of this scanner is comparable with that of high-end scanners which are very expensive.

Scanning 50 years of slides and photos and the process of initial scan is really clean and easy.
The process of clean up has proven more difficult but that isn't the fault of the scanner.
I am exceedingly pleased with this purchase and plan to expand into the business world with the product as an initial unit for a scanning service.

Comments about Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Scanner:
I will use the V750M to scan negatives and photos mostly for use in videos. So far I like it very much, but the film position guide was missing when I received the scanner; so I haven't really been able to use or test it. I wonder whether someone bought this particular unit from B&H and then returned it without the guide. I called Epson and they promised to send the part within 2-7 days. When I checked up on them, they said the part was out of stock and they had no information on when it might become available (I had to e-mail them to find this out). This is really unacceptable. So yes, my first impression of the scanner is good, but the Epson customer service in this case has been terrible. I don't know whether this is generally true of Epson.
