Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Good Product, But Over priced!
The lens hood is the perfect design for the lens that it is designed for. For the price the hood should be metal as the plastic breaks easily.

Dropped my camera - the lens hood broke the fall; it shattered. Did glue it back together, but tolerances are small; so bought new one. Now have two.

Comments about Canon EW-83H Lens Hood:
This is an exact replacement for the lens hood I lost. Expensive but functional. Probably should have tried the Vello at 70% less.

I broke my first lens hood for my Canon EF 24-105 F/4.0 IS Lens broke.
It's nice to know when this happens, B&H Video has a readily available replacement that is just days away.
This lens hood comes with this lens and is perfectly designed for it.

Comments about Canon EW-83H Lens Hood:
bought this for my 17-40 f/4L and it works perfectly. on a 1.6 crop camera anyway, like my 7d. it blocks a lot more of the stray light than the hood that normally comes with the 17-40. if you are using a full frame camera with the 17-40, then you probably want to stick with the stock hood.
