This is quite possibility the most inexpensive way to take your wildlife and bird photography up to the next notch. It gives you the ability to easily reach inside and under shady trees and get well lit shots that would otherwise be impossible.
The Better Beamer itself is quite solidly constructed, but mounting and aiming can be a little challenging. I found adding hook & loop fasteners to the inside of the arms and the sides of my flash helped the mounting situation a little (though that also makes it sit against the flash less snugly).
Aiming is a different beast. The Better Beamer works extremely well at focusing your flash's light, so well that in many situations especially at the wider end of it's range (300mm), misalignment can cause part of the frame to not receive coverage. Anything wider than 300mm or closer than about 30-50 feet will have a bright spot in part of the frame and not much else.
One downside is the lack of a slip over cover (not the storage pouch), so the Beamer can be covered when not being used. As it is you must be very aware of where the Beamer's lens is pointing in relation to the sun. I've seen more than a one flash that's been melted from errant sunlight.

I bought this to help reach out and fill in shadows when shooting wildlife. Overall I like it and find that when it is aligned correctly it creates very pleasing results and it allows me to get shots I never would be able to get under other lighting conditions.
For some reason when I attach the better beamer to my flash it usually is either too high or too low. Playing with the straps and resetting the beamer on the flash usually fixes this but it is time consuming and usually requires me to take a number of "test shots" to insure that the beamer is aligned with my lens. After a while of running around with it attached, I find that the beamer can slip a little and it needs to be adjusted.
After speaking with some other Better Beamer owners I learned that many use a flash bracket that allows the flash to move up and down. Since my bracket does not do that, this may be part of the problem I have.
The beamer does feel a little flimsy but it needs to remain light weight in order to work. It is a little clumsy to attach and hard to hand hold but after using it a while you start to get use to it. Only major thing to watch is the sun. You need to keep the sun away from the lens or you risk melting your flash or even causing a fire. A little piece of tough spun clipped onto the front lens when it is not being used prevents this.

Comments about Visual Echoes FX5 Better Beamer Flash Extender for Use with Telephoto Lenses - for Canon 430EX & Pentax AF500FTZ:
Being able to add a touch of light to my wildlife photography, especially to birds in shadow, has greatly increased my number of keeper shots. As a matter of fact, I may have to re-take some shots I thought were good, and replace them with new shots using the Better Beamer because I know I can now improve upon them.

I was surprised how simple this thing is. No way should it cost as much as it does...but there seems to be an unwritten rule that photo gear costs double what it should.

We get a lot of small birds in our backyard and I've been consistently unwhelmed by the photos I've taken of them as I've always had to overexpose the entire scene to get the bird, who might be sitting in the shade, exposed properly. My flash alone wasn't cutting it so I decided to give the better beamer a try and I was quite surprised to see the difference it made. My sky's aren't blown out now, and the birds are vibrant and detailed. My only niggle with it is that it is a bit flimsy, but I guess you don't want something too heavy on your flash.

I bought the Better Beamer to add pop to my Bird shots and it did just that. The action is frozen and the subjects and have catchlight in their eyes, even at a considerable distance. It does exactly what I wanted in giving my shots that extra added pop.

This is a great product that really works to get the flash out to greater distances. I use it primarily with wildlife photography and am able to extend the reach of my flash consistent with my long telephotos (400mm and beyond). Great for filling in shadows out in the wild.

The Better Beamer flash extender has worked perfectly since I purchased it. It's great on my new 500 mm F/4 lens. Can also be used with the 300mm F/4 IS/USM lens and the other tele/super telephoto lenses too. It even comes with a neoprene case to store the unit in. Great!

Comments about Visual Echoes FX5 Better Beamer Flash Extender for Use with Telephoto Lenses - for Canon 430EX & Pentax AF500FTZ:
This product is nice for bird photography because it effectively extends the reach of the flash unit, illuminates birds in a dark canopy and creates a nice catch-light in the eye. It seems to work pretty nicely against an open sky as well. It is pretty easy to assemble and when disassembled is completely flat for easy storage. The warning about it being a "magnifying" lens is not stern enough. If left in the back seat of the car on a sunny day it could torch something so it is better to hide it under something or disassemble it.

I use this for wildlife photography. When a bird is in a tree and its in the shade way up... you need something that will reach it, right? This works pretty well, but it will slide off and fall to the ground a bunch of times as you walk around. It attaches poorly and when you remove the lens from the "arms" you worry the velcro will rip off too.

Set up is simple and the beamer feels secure even under windy conditions. So far I've used it for birds only as fill light to create catch lights. The only thing I don't like so far is that the velcro grabs on to the dividers in the interior of my camera bag.

I've been doing alot of wildlife photography and was working way too hard on my post processing when it came bringing out the detail in the shadows
After doing a bunch of research, I found that most of the pro's are using a Better Beamer with their long lenses to bring detail back into those shadowed areas.
I ordered one to give it a try and was amazed after my first day of using it. Why oh why did I wait so long to get this?
Think of all the time I could have saved myself!!

The distance that this thing can reach out in day or night is incredible!
I mostly use this for fill light for daytime nature photography. This is a great way to shoot that bullfrog resting in the shade of a log or that bird that wont let you get close enough for normal flash.
I have also used this to capture action shots out on the field at my wife's softball game. I have shot second base from home plate and it was sufficiently lit. The main thing it will do for you that your normal flash won't is that it will hold together in distance.
One down side is that it does focus into a spot light pattern which can leave the frame unevenly lit at times. But when you just have to reach out there, or need that extra boost of light in the day time it is great!

I use this for wildlife photography. It definitely increases the range of the flash and saves battery life. Rain forests tend to be very dark by camera standards. With this, you'll catch the bird in the distance.
The only downside is that with nothing holding the fresnel lens top and bottom, it does take some abuse.
This is still better than another model I saw with a hard plastic frame all around, which would make it too bulky for travel, in my opinion.
Mine lasted about 5 years though before I ordered my replacement lens, which arrived quickly.
Also, since my flash is not the exact model intended, I found that it fit a lot better with velcro on the sides of the flash and inside of the plastic supports.
It does take some practice putting it on correctly.

Attach this simple magnifying lens to your flash and you can fill shadows on wildlife 150 feet away. Order the Better Beamer to match your flash and enjoy lighting or fill lighting birds in flight as well as other subjects that are at a greater distance than your flash can travel, without the help of the Better Beamer
