I have been using Photoshop Elements 5.0 and love it, however, this program has transformed my RAW pics from my D70 into something spectacular. I did not realize that my camera took pics like that.
Going back and opening some of my old RAW files has yielded better color and more details. Easy to use and very intuitive.

I used the trial version after purchasing my D200. On thepositive side, I like Nikon's processing controls. I have aNikon scanner and I prefer the Nikon Scan controls to otherscanning interfaces I have. I was happy to find similarfeatures on NX. One feature I really liked (probably thereason I would buy NX) is the B&W filter control. I do a lotof B&W and I've been waiting for a that specific feature. Iknow you can do it with the curves & channels in Photoshopbut the BW filter option of NX is straight forward, is laidout in traditional filter jargon, and I think, more effective. On the negative side, as the previous reviewer noted, it'sslower than death. I have a computer that is between therequired and recommended parameters and it is significantlyslower in applying changes than, say, Photoshop. (Pictureperfect is fairly slow, too. Must be a Nikon thing). Now,for the biggest negative: Buying it. I just resent spendingover $3000 for a camera and lens (with the intention ofspending a lot more completing the system) and having to buya basic program to process the images. Its not like its ahuge program like Photoshop that does amazing things. It hasa couple of cool, helpful features. It SHOULD BE STANDARD atleast with their pro-level cameras.
Problems Encountered: There was a glitch on the screen that never went away. (andis only on that program). Also, very slow

Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
The only reason I rated this software with 3 stars is that the interface isn't very intuitive. Otherwise the software does a great job editing my photos taken on the D300. Version 2 is much improved, and I would recommend it.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
U-point technology helped save many pictures I would've thrown away otherwise. RAW utilities works great. Only one item I wish Capture NX will have in the future: a good healing brush. This is an essential tool for Nikon RAW shooters such as myself.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
So far, I'm about 15 percent proficient and like what I see, but it will take some time to wean me away from my previous NIKON product. I suppose I'll have a different report in about a month.
Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
For anyone who has gone through the steep learning curve ofPhotoshop you will welcome the ease and simplicity of usingNX. Aside from the normal photo parameters that you canadjust NX offers some neat functions like U-Point/ControlPoints where adjustments can be contained withing a givenarea. For example for a head and shoulders pix where thebackground is heavily lighted usually results in the facethat is underexposed. By placing the Control Point markeron the face area and adjusting the size of the field to beaffected the program will increase thebrightness/contract/saturation of the the facial/neck areaonly while leaving the rest of the frame as is. This isvery impressive. Other functions are just as easy to useand have powerful results. Processing time was always quickand not slow as some other reviews have suggested. I haven't mastered all of the functions yet but the onesthat I have used resulted in excellent results and they wereeasy to use. While NX may not contain all of thecapabilities of PS from my perspective they cover most ofwhat you will need during the editing of digital photos. Finally, Nikon's technical support has been excellent bothin technical content as well as time for a response (phoneas well as email).
Expertise: Advanced Amateur
Problems Encountered: One feature that was not included is a slide show function. When I load a new set of photos I generally like to performan initial review by watching a full screen slide show. This is significantly easier than loading slidesindividually or by reviewing the thumbnails images.
Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Items I Recommend: Nikon View or other pgms for a slide show function
Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
1) Certainly a lot easier to use than photoshop2) Non destructive editing3) Powerful U Point technology enables users to directly enhance the image selectively, without the use of masks, selections, or layers. 4) Batch processing is simple, and saves photographers time5) Version 1.1 is much faster than earlier releases.Nikon allows you to download Capture NX for a thirty-day trial period.
Expertise: Expert
Problems Encountered: 1) Does not support RAW images from non-Nikon cameras although it does supports JPG & TIFF2) Memory hog and slower than photoshopShould have been included with every Nikon DSLR
Items I Recommend: Nikon DSLR

Comments about Nikon Capture NX Software:
Compared to other photo editing programs I have used, NXprovides excellent post processing results. The U Pointtechnology is a killer feature, and I can vastly improvephotos that have dark faces against a bright backgroundrapidly and with good results which would take me a lotlonger to do in photoshop or Paint Sho Pro. It's a greatfeature for non-professionals. Overall, the results areoutstanding. Unfortunately, the program is painfullyslow. Maybe lots of RAM in the PC would help. It alsodoes not provide built-in capability for loading customcurves into my Nikon D70s. This was included with NikonCapture, but is an additional cost add-in in Capture NX. C'mon, Nikon. You can purchase Tone-up for $15 instead toload custom curved into several Nikon DSLRs and provide verygood post processing capabilities. The price is rathersteep considering it doesn't even have built-in loading ofcustom curves into camera.
