The Carson MagniScope is an unusual and useful magnifying instrument. Two components combine to create three different optical devices - an 8x20mm monocular, 3x stand magnifier, and when threaded together, a precision 30x portable microscope.

I use this product for snow science evaluation. Most books suggest a 10x lupe but with this MagniScope you can really see in detail what is going on. Used a friends last year and can't wait for the snow to fly this year.

Comments about Carson MagniScope (3x/8x/30x):
I've not used this in the field as a microscope yet but it appears to work well on a desk as long as it's used under a good light source. Having two separate areas for focusing was a bit confusing at first but once that was understood it works well.
You will likely need one hand to operate and hold the scope but can manipulate the subject with forceps using the other hand through the slot at the bottom.
Also consider some sort of lighting source (perhaps a flashlight?) unless you will be in bright enough light to see your subject at high mag. Also make sure that your subject is small enough to fit inside the lower cup of the device.
