Compatible with any Pentax lens ever produced and featuring Shake Reduction, the Pentax K100D Digital SLR Camera is the kind of camera that makes history. With a 6.1 megapixel APS-C size CCD and sophisticated 16-segment multi-pattern metering, the K100D delivers outstanding image reproduction, while the bright, high-precision Pentax mirror viewfinder features with 0.85X magnification. Incorporating a large 2.5 inch LCD monitor with 210,000 pixel resolution, and a friendly Mode Dial offering Auto Picture and Picture modes as well as new Scene modes for even simpler photography. All these features combine in a compact design with high-rigidity stainless-steel chassis that is built to last.

The Pentax -developed Shake Reduction (SR) system in the K100D effectively offers a two-stop advantage for sharp, blur-free images even under difficult shooting conditions, such as using a telephoto lens or shooting in low light without a flash. The SR mechanism minimizes camera shake by oscillating the CCD image sensor vertically and horizontally at high speed in proportion to the amount of camera shake detected by a built-in sensor. As a result, the system does not require special anti-shake lenses and can be used with almost all existing PENTAX interchangeable lenses.

True-to-life Images with 6.1 Effective Megapixels of Resolution
The K100D features a large, high-performance APS-C size (23.5mm x 15.7mm) CCD as its image sensor, assuring faithful reproduction in the resulting images - from images with beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds to those with edge-to-edge sharpness. Combining 6.1 effective megapixels with a high-performance imaging engine and advanced image-processing technologies, the K100D is designed to produce beautiful, true-to-life images that are rich in gradation. What's more, it offers a choice of two finishing touches of "Natural" or "Bright" to create a distinctive atmosphere.
Super-compact, Ultra-lightweight Body
While the K100D is designed to be compact and lightweight to enhance operability and portability, it also incorporates a stainless-steel chassis and a fiber-reinforced engineering plastic housing to reinforce its overall rigidity and durability.
Compatible with All Pentax Interchangeable Lenses
Use your existing Pentax 35mm lenses and accessories. The K100D offers the outstanding benefit of lens interchangeability that allows users to take advantage of almost all existing Pentax interchangeable lenses. (PENTAX K, KA, KAF and KAF2-mount 35mm-format lenses can be used without an adapter or modification. Pentax screw-mount 35mm-format lenses and Pentax 645- and 67-system lenses can be used with an adapter. Some functions may not be available with certain lenses.)
Shake Reduction (SR) Mechanism
The K100D features a Pentax -developed Shake Reduction (SR) system, which effectively reduces camera shake for sharp, blur-free images even under difficult shooting conditions, such as using a telephoto lens, shooting in low light conditions without a supplementary flash illumination. This system does not require special anti-shake lenses and may be used with almost all existing Pentax interchangeable lenses
11-point Wide-frame AF System
The sophisticated SAFOX VIII autofocus system features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors) to automatically focus on the subject with utmost precision, even when it is positioned off center. The in-focus sensor point is automatically superimposed in red in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation. This high-precision AF system offers a choice of two AF modes: the conventional single AF, and the continuous AF, which maintains focus on the moving subject as long as the shutter release button is pressed halfway down.
Multi-pattern Metering Assures Excellent Exposures
The K100D incorporates a sophisticated 16-segment multi-pattern metering system which solves even the most complicated lighting conditions efficiently and instantly to produce beautifully exposed images frame after frame. Spot and center-weighted metering modes are also available to accommodate specialized applications.
Auto Sensitivity Control up to ISO 3200 Equivalent
The K100D features an auto sensitivity control function, which automatically sets the optimum standard output sensitivity - up to equivalent ISO of 3200, which is the highest automatic setting in its class - based on such data as the subject's brightness level and the lens focal length. Since this function allows the use of higher shutter speeds in poor lighting situations (such as indoor sports events and night scenes), it helps photographers reduce camera shake and prevent blurred images.
Top Shutter Speed of 1/4000 Second
The K100D offers a top shutter speed of 1/4000 second to freeze fast-moving subjects and capture decisive moments and features a flash synchronization speed of 1/180 second and a bulb setting (B) for extended exposures.
Effective Noise Reduction
The noise reduction function can be activated at slow shutter speeds to eliminate digital noise that may spoil the quality of captured images during extended exposures.
Continuous Shooting at 2.8 Images per Second
To trace the movement of an active subject or capture a sequence of the subject's expressions, the K100D offers a continuous shooting mode that allows the photographer to capture multiple images (up to five images at Best image quality in JPEG format) at a maximum speed of approximately 2.8 images per second.
Auto Picture Mode for Effortless Point-and-shoot SLR Photography
The K100D offers the exclusive Pentax Auto Picture Mode, which automatically and instantly selects one of the four Picture modes - including Portrait, Landscape and Macro - by calculating various photographic factors to assure optimum results. Since this advanced shooting mode takes away all the concerns about aperture, shutter-speed, white-balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness settings, the photographer can concentrate on image composition and shutter opportunity.
Large LCD Monitor
The K100D incorporates a large 2.5 inch color LCD monitor that offers a wide-view of over 140 degrees vertically and horizontally, ensuring effortless image viewing even from a diagonal position. The monitor offers digital zooming of playback images up to 12 times for easy confirmation of the image's focusing status and details and the large monitor size allows for large letters, digits and icons on the menu screens to facilitate menu confirmation and camera operations. In addition, the color scheme between the menu listings and the background is optimized for each menu screen to assure at-a-glance confirmation, even under varying shooting conditions.
Bright and Clear Viewfinder
The K100D features a lightweight pentamirror viewfinder, which combines Pentax finder optics and a Natural-Bright-Matte II focusing screen to deliver bright, clear subject image with a 0.85X magnification and a 96 percent field of view.
SD memory card compatibility with Save-by-day Storage Feature
The K100D is compatible with the widely available Secure Digital (SD) memory card as its storage media, not only assuring high-speed recording and readout of image data, but also helping to reduce the camera body size. Furthermore, the camera can store images standard format where all files are located in one folder, or the images can be automatically stored in folders for each day of shooting using the save-by-day feature.
Powered by Common AA Batteries or CR-V3 Lithium Batteries
The K100D can operate from many different power sources to maximize user convenience.  Use either 4x AA Batteries (lithium, alkaline, or NiMH), 2x CR-V3 lithium batteries or an optional AC adapter.  NiMH AA are highly recommended for economy, lithium AA for colder climates, and CR-V3 for long life, lowest weight, and extremely low inactivity-based power loss (unlike NiMH).
Powerful Software Package Included
The K100D includes Pentax Photo Laboratory 3 which features the reliable SILKYPIX image-processing engine for RAW data processing, and the Pentax Photo Browser 3 that offers faster data processing speed and better operability than the previous version, and can convert RAW images to the DNG format.

EXCELLENT CAMERA

By Skully

from Washington,PA

Comments about Pentax K100D Digital Camera (Camera Body):

Though I shoot professionally with Canon gear I was looking for a digital camera for personal/family use instead of using my higher end Canons due to size and weight I tried the canon rebel xt and xti which the bodies felt cheap and the cameras were small in my hands. Then I tried the K100D it felt perfect the first time I picked it up the body It has some weight to it and it feels strong and well built. I purchased it with the lens kit, which the lens has an outstanding strong quality build and sharp Using the camera I was quite impressed I shoot in RAW only and the photos I took were excellent, sharp as a tack and color balance was excellent most of the photos I took didnt require any post fix with supplied RAW photo software I took the camera on a professional shoot which was a wedding and it handled everything perfectly, flash exposures and multi lighting issues even high contrast situations I feel this camera shoots somewhat better then my canon digitals when it comes to image quality Bottom line strong solid build excellent optics high end software and top notch overall performance at a great price. I highly recommend this camera from beginner to a pro Im planning on getting its big brother the K10 to use with this camera.

Expertise: Professional

Problems Encountered: Memory buffer fills up quickly and is somewhat slow for fast action shooting also auto focus isnt as quick or quiet as canon line Really these are not problems just personal issues with me being my first Pentax used to canons Wish it had a battery pack

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Ton of Canon 35mm and digital gear

Items I Recommend: Pentax dedicated hotshoe flash 360FGZ

Great camera for the prize, don't expect much in some departments...

Comments about Pentax K100D Digital Camera (Camera Body):

I have owned this camera since december and I have taken a little bit more than 2000 photos with it. It feels great and is extremely easy to use since all the functions and menus are very accessible and easy to understand. The only thing that still needs work is the autofocus. I bought a Sigma 18-125mm 3.5-5.6 with it and is incredible the amount of good photos I got ruined because the autofocus missed. I have been getting better pictures since I decided to focus manually or focus with the lens at full zoom first and then recomposing. Also is a little annoying the fact that the Pentax Photo browser program that comes with the camera does not seem to work well with some printers. Beside that is a very good camera, just needs some refinement and understanding love.

Problems Encountered: Autofocus does not work as well as a Nikon.Bundle editing program has some working problems: the options window does not open properly, it does not work well with some printers and is limiting in some respects since you cannot open the raw files with any other program and it has functions to edit the raw files that are not available for the jpegs and vice-versa.

Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Nikon N90

Items I Recommend: Large apperture lens
