I purchased two of these as side lights for large group photos. Bouncing the on-camera flash off the ceiling with a Stofen diffuser still gave some direct light and was enough to fire the slaves. Side lighting helps reduce glare from glasses. I like the versatility of the shoe mount and threaded mount and use them on tripods. Recycle time with fresh batteries is about 4 seconds. On the downside, the flash output isn't adjustable (and I knew that before buying), and the battery cover is hard to close because of the spring tension on the batteries. At least I know the batteries will make contact all the time!

1. If you use rechargeable AA batteries, the capacitor doesn't seemed to reach required voltage and hence ready light might not light up. Also the light slave might not trigger. With alkaline not an issue. However, the cycle time is a tad long at 4 secs.
2. the sync voltage on the hot shoe is VERY high at 190V. Don't use it with digital SLRs without using a safe-sync first.

I only need fill light occasionally, the flash trigger works well. These units have no adjustment so they are full flash every time, I new that when I bought them. They do exactly what I ask of them. Only about 4-5 sec. to recharge. Not bad.

A great value and adds some back light when needed. It's a little retro looking but does exactly what it is designed to do. I added a layer of diffusion paper over the flash to soften the light and take this flash to every wedding I shoot.

Small, compact and gives a punch to the background shadows, can be mounted on a mini tripod or use the clip to sit it on the floor. Only needs to see the flash of the main lights to go off. Only problem its that its a full flash every time but that little thing can be worked around

Comments about Smith-Victor PG250S Wireless Mini Slave Flash (Guide No. 70'/21 m):
I bought this as a companion to my first off-camera speedlight (an SB-900). For the price (<$25), it was worth a try and I'm happy with it.
Simple to use:
- Add batteries (4x AA's)
- Flip the 'On' switch
- Let the capacitor charge (~5-6 seconds)
- Pop off another flash and it will fire
The PG250S sports a little wire stand on the bottom to give it some angle when used on it's own. The side of the unit has a cold-shoe mount to give you the option of attaching it to a flash bracket. And if that wasn't enough, there is a 1/4-20 mount on the underside to attach the unit to an available tripod (or in my case a JOBY GorillaPod).
Add a few pieces of velcro and trim some filters to give you control over the output power and light color and this is a pretty capable $25 accessory.
Con - it is full-power output only, so every time it fires, you have to wait the 5-6 seconds for the cap to recharge.
If Smith-Victor is reading, I'd request an option to select 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 power maybe (giving faster recycle time) and maybe add a second optical trigger to the rear (or make it rotatable) so the unit can trigger from more obscure locations. I'd probably end up willing to pay more for the extras, too.

I use it as a rim light with a snoot. If you position it right to receive light from another off-camera flash you can get decent results. Had to play with the shutter speed to get it in the exposure every time - for me 1/250sec works good. I wish the sensor was mounted differently(rotating?). Can't commplain - for the $$ and size it is what expected.

This is a simply perfect and inexpensive slave to complement my Smith-Victor KF-2U Thrifty Flash Kit. I'm currently using it on a mini tripod but intend to obtain a small boom & stand ASAP to make best use of it. I don't experience any hotspotting with a simple white hankerchief thrown over it.

Comments about Smith-Victor PG250S Wireless Mini Slave Flash (Guide No. 70'/21 m):
This is a great value for the money. It flashes everytime and is very sensitive. It performs great as a backlight or a hair light. It does seem to give a bit of a shock after it's turned off and discharged from the metal plate. It's flash was a bit hot for the gel I was using with it and melted it a bit.
