Cisco 10/100 8-Port VPN Router
The 10/100 8-Port VPN Router from Linksys combines the functions of a Cable/DSL router, an IPSec VPN gateway, a network switch and network firewall into one compact device. The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers that can connect via 8 standard RJ-45 ethernet ports. The router also features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, making it an excellent choice for your home or office network.
- Load Balancing Router
- The router features 1 dedicated WAN port as well as a port that can be used for DMZ or for adding a 2nd WAN Internet connection. Utilizing 2 simultaneous Internet connections allows the router to perform load balancing, which helps to optimize network traffic.
- Integrated Firewall
- The router features a powerful firewall to help protect your computer against malicious attacks that often target computers connected to the Internet, giving you peace of mind while you are connected to the web.
- IPSec VPN Tunneling
- The router works as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateway, allowing for up to 50 simultaneous VPN tunnels. IPSec security features many advanced technologies such as DES and 3DES encryption as well as MD5 and SHA authentication to help protect your network. This lets you securely access your home or office network from another location.
- DMZ Port
- The router features a DMZ port that allows you to connect a computer directly to the Internet, bypassing the integrated firewall. This allows advanced users to connect a computer on their network in order to work with applications that a firewall may interfere.

After many years of use, my old 8 port router died and needed to be replaced. The Cisco/Linksys 10/100 8-Port router met all my functional requirements and then some (it also supports VPN access). The system was very easy to install (simply moved my existing cables from the old router to the new one) and accessed the administration console (http://192.168.1.1) to perform the minimal configuration for my network as described in the documentation and I was done. We run our desktops and printers off wired connections, along with the Motorola cable modem and D-Link wireless router (configured as a DHCP passthrough hub). The upgrade was seamless and easy. I would recommend this to others without hesitation. B&H shipping was quick and the equipment arrived in perfect condition sooner than expected.

I've used the RV082's bigger brother, the RV016 as well. The only difference is the number of ports on the front. The 016 has had issues in a school/office type environment where it repeatedly crashes and resets when there's a lot of traffic. So far the 082 has worked well. I'm using at home and it's nice that it has a feature to update dyndns with it's IP address so I can VPN into my network. Also, at the school, the blocking features and VLAN's are nice.
