The Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Z Planar T* Lens is a high-speed standard lens for the exacting 35mm SLR photographer. Considered by professional photographers to be one of the worlds best SLR lenses (if not the best), this "Z" lens is now available with the "universal (M42)" screw-mount. This allows it to be adapted to almost any 35mm SLR system.
The Planar lens with its front-and-back symmetry was invented by Dr. Paul Rudolf and is one of the best-known Carl Zeiss T* lenses. It is remarkably effective in eliminating aberrations and possesses very high definition allowing contrast in the subject to be faithfully reproduced.

I use this with an AF-confirm adapter on my recently purchased Sony A850. Was a little hesitant at first since I couldn't find even one testimony on this combo. Went ahead anyway, and very glad I did... So why not the Sony prime? Well, first of all I'm gonna quote another reviewer from the nikon side: "Color rendering, bokeh and detail are amazing. Solid feel and very well made". And let me add this: amazing just isn't a big enough word! Only Leicas and Hasselblads have given me this before. So why not a Sony Zeiss lens? Well the 50/1.4 would probably cost twice as much or more if it existed. So why zeiss manuals for all mounts except Sony? That's a bummer.
Precise focussing is difficult, a bit of a chance a lot of the time, especially with my less than perfect right eye, but still not as difficult as I had feared. Having to operate the camera more or less manually (and without auto-diaphragm, mind you!!) makes shooting a bit tricky and there's a mistake or two in every three, but the thing is, with this lens even the mistakes are hard to delete. With shapes and tones like these, who needs focus? Well... the lens is in fact super sharp as soon as you take the time to handle it right and be mindful about what you're doing. Just use something else when you don't have that time.
So, to sum it up: With some photographic understanding this one is an absolute joy to use, it's beautiful to look at, and the results are stunning. To be honest I'm downright proud of it...

I was shocked by high sharpness and overall image quality prodused by this lens.
IF i would have a choice to have one lens only - I would take this one.
I have 16-35 f2.8L II, 24-70 2.8L, 50 1.4, all of them are not even close ti this one in qiality terms.
IT IS MY FAVORITE ONE. BEST ONE. SHARPER ONE. I JUST LOVE IT.
